Job Summary
Chartwells Higher Education is seeking a self‑motivated individual for the role of General Manager at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City. As the General Manager, you will be a “hands‑on” leader responsible for all campus dining and vending operations leadership and have authority to make decisions. You will lead and engage with our dining and culinary teams by creating excitement and enthusiasm, in accordance with the organization’s and MSM’s culture, ensuring our programs and guidelines are followed. This position will drive guest satisfaction and engagement. You must have a current NYC DOH Food Handler’s Certificate immediately, as well as a current ServSafe certification within the first 30 days. Key Responsibilities
- Lead, manage, and encourage a team on campus, providing top‑notch service to students, clients, and the community.
- Drive and develop the team towards building strong relationships with clients and achieving key performance indicators (e.g., great experience, safety, employee engagement).
- Supervise the hiring, training, and development of staff to uphold excellence in service and food quality.
- Operate and enhance campus dining and catering program in cooperation with the campus community.
- Represent Manhattan School of Music and Chartwells’ vision and values in dining locations and serve as main point of contact for clients.
- Promote awareness of the campus dining program and develop nutritional and dietary awareness, residential life interactions, etc.
- Work closely with college departments to ensure students’ needs are met.
- Analyze customer research and market conditions and act proactively.
- Manage productivity of culinary, catering, and front‑of‑house teams.
- Oversee execution of catering, receptions, VIP events, and student events.
- Ensure customer satisfaction and good public relations through safe and efficient use of resources.
- Direct staff to provide scheduled retail services in accordance with corporate policies and presentation standards.
- Implement and maintain cash handling standards as outlined in the Corporate Policies and Procedures Manual to eliminate theft of services or company funds.
- Oversee P&L, budgeting and forecasting, using company metrics and goals.
- Champion team development; conduct performance evaluations, succession planning, and fully understand all roles within the operation.
- Work with the chef to create nutritious, top‑quality food for the campus community.
- Implement new culinary programs in conjunction with Chartwells marketing and culinary team.
Qualifications
- Associate degree preferred but not required.
- Must hold current NYC DOH Food Handlers Certificate and current ServSafe certification within 30 days.
- Six or more years of operational food service management experience.
- Knowledge of food and catering trends focusing on quality, production, sanitation, food cost controls, marketing, and presentation.
- Strong leadership abilities with validated experience in supervising and developing staff.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize optimally.
- Outstanding customer service skills with a dedication to maintaining high standards of quality.
- Proficiency in preparing and analyzing financial reports.
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Must be experienced with computers.
- ServSafe® Certified.
