Assistant Professor of Practice – School of Journalism

The School of Journalism at the University of Arizona invites applications for a full‑time, non‑tenure‑eligible appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor of Practice, specializing in video/audio editing and production across television, social, digital platforms and media (news, documentary, sports). The successful candidate will primarily focus on teaching video and audio editing courses as well as courses on television production, podcast production, and multimedia story production at the School of Journalism.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Teach three classes per semester in an academic year.
  • Work with students to plan, direct, edit, and publish audio and video work in the School of Journalism’s media outlets and enter it into contests.
  • Network with professional editors and producers to place stories in outlets in Arizona and beyond.
  • Assist students in making connections for internships and jobs.
  • Perform service, outreach, and leadership within the School of Journalism, which may include collaborating and working with tenure‑track and practice professors, leading various programs or centers within the school.
  • Perform service, outreach, and leadership within the College of Social and Behavioral Science, the University of Arizona, and beyond.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Excellent video editing and production skills across news and documentary formats.
  • Excellent audio editing and production skills that can be utilized in video production and podcast production.
  • Strong mentoring, visual, writing, and communication skills.
  • Well‑versed in story development and storytelling for video, multimedia, and documentary on various platforms.
  • Superior familiarity with audio/podcast equipment and production.
  • Superior familiarity with editing software, including Adobe Premiere, Adobe Audition, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe After Effects.
  • A team player who is collaborative, collegial, and willing to work closely with tenure‑track and practice faculty members on innovative and creative projects.
  • Capacity for communicating professionally, promptly, and effectively with a wide variety of constituencies on campus and outside of the university.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A master’s degree in journalism or a related field, or a bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field and eight years of professional experience.
  • Minimum three years experience editing video as a television or multi‑platform journalist.
  • Minimum two years teaching experience at the school/college level or equivalent teaching/mentoring experiences with professional organization communities, such as Online News Association or the Broadcast Education Association.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in journalism or a related field.
  • Five years or more of teaching experience at the college or university level.
  • Five years or more of video filming and editing experience.
  • Working proficiency in Spanish language.

Job Details

Rank: Assistant Professor (Career‑Track) | Tenure‑Eligible: No | FLSA: Exempt | Full Time/Part Time: Full Time | Hours per Week: 40 | FTE: 1.0 | Salary: $72,000 per year.
