Job Summary

Under general supervision, is responsible for operation and general maintenance of the circulation desk and the collection and inspection of library materials at the San Antonio Public Library. Working conditions are primarily inside an office environment. Exercises no supervision.

Work Location

One of 28 library locations. Location dependent upon the needs of the department.

Work Hours

This position requires a flexible schedule, including availability for evenings and weekends.

Essential Job Functions

  • Attends to the circulation needs of library patrons, including checking materials in and out and resolving patron complaints regarding overdue items, fines and other circulation matters.
  • Collects library fines and fees.
  • Processes requests for reservations of library materials and enters data into the library's automated system.
  • Provides vital records following appropriate procedures at assigned library locations.
  • Assists patrons in obtaining library cards.
  • Prepares and submits statistical and cash reports.
  • Answers inquiries and refers patrons requiring professional assistance to appropriate staff.
  • Maintains supplies, occasionally lifting and carrying materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • May train other clerical employees regarding circulation procedures and policies.
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Optimistic and welcoming approach to customer interactions.
  • Experience in maintaining a professional demeanor during high‑stress interactions.
  • Experience working as part of a diverse team to complete tasks in a collaborative work environment.
  • Spanish language proficiency.
  • Cash Handling experience.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Knowledge of basic arithmetic, spelling, and grammar.
  • Skill in utilizing a personal computer and associated software programs.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and the general public.
  • Ability to maintain clerical records and prepare statistical reports.
  • Ability to perform all physical requirements of the job, with or without accommodations.
