VTDigger.org
In the 16 years
since it was founded, VTDigger has become Vermont's essential source of news and investigation - and a model for sustainable, nonprofit journalism across the country.
We work to promote
our mission
of producing rigorous journalism that explains complex issues, promotes public accountability and fosters democratic and civic engagement each and every day.
VTDigger seeks a seasoned editorial leader for a pivotal role at the heart of our newsroom. The Managing Editor works closely with the Editor-in-Chief and CEO to advance VTDigger's mission of producing rigorous, impactful journalism that explains complex issues, promotes public accountability, and strengthens democratic and civic engagement across Vermont. This is a hands-on leadership position that blends editorial strategy, team management, and daily newsroom operations. The Managing Editor helps translate VTDigger's mission into clear editorial priorities - leveraging audience data, community input, and reporting impact to shape coverage that deepens public understanding and drives meaningful accountability.
This role is ideal for an experienced, mission-driven leader who thrives in a fast-paced environment, excels at guiding teams, and is committed to high standards of journalistic excellence. The Managing Editor oversees the day-to-day operation of a newsroom of nearly two dozen editors, reporters, and photographers - ensuring stories are pitched, assigned, rigorously edited, and delivered in ways that resonate with readers. In partnership with the Editor-in-Chief, this person leads daily news planning, supports time-intensive investigative and enterprise reporting, and responds decisively to breaking news.
The ideal candidate brings a proven track record of editorial leadership, strong news judgment, and experience coaching and developing journalists. A deep understanding of Vermont's people, issues, and institutions is essential, along with the ability to translate complex topics into accessible, compelling coverage. Exceptional communication, collaboration, and organizational skills are required, as is the ability to manage multiple priorities with clarity and momentum. Experience using audience metrics, engagement insights, and impact tracking to inform editorial decisions is strongly preferred. Creativity, a solutions-oriented mindset, and a passion for independent, nonprofit journalism - and for VTDigger's mission to provide trustworthy, high-quality news for Vermont - are key.
