Communications Manager (Climate One)

We're looking for a strategic, creative and collaborative communications professional to help create, plan and implement our communications, marketing and brand strategy. The Communications Manager will serve as a key partner to the Managing Director to grow Climate One’s audience and impact. With Climate One’s 20th anniversary coming up in 2027, this is an exciting time for an entrepreneurial and creative leader to build on the program’s rich history and help shape the next 20 years of empowering climate conversations.
This is a full-time, exempt position based in San Francisco, with two days a week in the office required for in-person meetings and evening events.
About Climate One Climate One is the premier platform to deepen our understanding of the most critical issue of our time: the climate emergency. Through a weekly podcast, national radio show, and live convenings for thought leaders and concerned members of the public, Climate One creates opportunities for dialogue and inspires a more complete understanding of the current crisis.
Founded in 2007 as a live program based at Commonwealth Club World Affairs of California, a nonprofit and nonpartisan public forum, Climate One has evolved into a multi-platform thought leader reaching 200,000 listeners every week.
Responsibilities include:
Create and publish content on Climate One’s website and social media accounts (LinkedIn, Bluesky, TikTok/YouTube Shorts) designed to promote each week’s episode
Produce weekly email newsletter, episode graphics, and video trailer
Liaise with episode guests and radio marketing consultant to support their promotion efforts
Manage other marketing efforts to achieve event ticket sales and podcast download targets
Collaborate with the development team to steward a listener community via in-person live shows as well as digital platforms like Patreon and Discord
Organization communications, marketing, and media relations
In partnership with Managing Director, develop and implement a strategic communications and marketing plan to build Climate One’s brand visibility, support audience growth, and deepen community engagement
Review and respond to audience feedback and media inquiries
Keep the Climate One website and functionality up to date, with support from web development consultants
Manage production of Climate One’s annual report and other print collateral
Serve as primary liaison to outside communications and creative service vendors, including marketing, printing, graphic design consultants, photographers and web developers
Support collaborative communications efforts with Commonwealth Club World Affairs staff
Metrics and analytics
Develop and monitor audience growth and engagement metrics dashboard
Track and report key metrics and milestones on a regular basis
Event support
Support with set up, greeting, refreshments, and other tasks during Climate One’s in-person programs and donor events
Network with event attendees during receptions, introduce people to each other, and foster social connections in the climate community
Required Qualifications
A minimum of 3 years of experience in communications and marketing, preferably at a climate-focused organization
Strong writing skills and demonstrated talent in conveying energy, environment, sustainability, and climate justice issues in language relevant to experts and accessible to non-experts
Demonstrated project management skills, including the ability to prioritize tasks and follow through to completion
Demonstrated experience in strategic use of social media marketing, email newsletters, and digital advertising
Proficiency in digital software including:
CRM (Salesforce or similar), email marketing (Campaign Monitor or similar), CMS (Drupal or similar)
Podcast hosting and monetization platforms (Megaphone)
Graphic design and sound editing tools (Canva, Descript, Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Premiere)
Digital productivity and remote collaboration tools (Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, Slack, Zoom)
Working knowledge of tools like Adobe Premiere or CapCut necessary to produce basic social media-first clips
Ability to work effectively independently with limited direction, as well as with others as part of a team
Ability to interact in an effective and professional manner with staff, media, podcast listeners, Club guests, and the public
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
Experience with PR and media outreach
Experience in event design and implementation
Benefits and Compensation This is a full-time exempt position with a salary range of $75,000 to $85,000. The Commonwealth Club of California offers health, dental and vision coverage as well as life and AD&D insurance for employees. Other benefits include a generous holiday and time-off policy, and membership to the YMCA of San Francisco.
