Monroe County Public Library is seeking an engaged, innovative librarian to join our fantastic Downtown Teen Services team to provide excellent patron-facing services and audience programming. We facilitate a dynamic and fast paced environment during after school hours and on weekends when teens from multiple community middle and high schools drop by to participate in events and hang out with their friends.
This position’s primary focus is the planning and implementation of a wide variety of outreach events with area schools and youth serving organizations, as well as partnering with local community groups to engage teens, their caregivers, and other youth serving professionals and organizations in Monroe County. Additional responsibilities include serving as Person in Charge in the Downtown Teen Space during regular shifts, developing and implementing a small number of weekly programs (including events, displays, on-line content, and other aspects) for a diverse audience of teens in the Teen Space, assisting in the development of high-quality readers’ advisory services, and partnering with other Library departments to implement successful initiatives.
Responsible for building collaborative relationships and engaging teens with a positive and enthusiastic approach. A successful candidate possesses excellent communication and interpersonal skills for interacting with patrons, colleagues and outside contacts and is consistently pleasant, positive, and responsive to a diverse public and staff.
Fluency in a second language is considered helpful.

I have extensive knowledge of the Library’s services, policies, mission, and objectives. This knowledge extends to one or more audience and subject specialty and Library collection/content.

I plan, implement, promote, and assess programs (including events, displays, on-line content, and other aspects) at the Library and in the community and for diverse audiences. My engagement with the community and emphasis on partnering enables me to reach new audiences and consistently provide successful programs which complement community and partner needs rather than duplicate.
I build collaborative relationships and have a passion for engaging the community with a positive and enthusiastic approach to working with multiple stake-holders.
I have excellent communication and interpersonal skills for interacting with patrons, employees and outside contacts. I am consistently pleasant, positive, and responsive to a diverse public and staff.

I employ good organizational and time management skills and successfully initiate, plan, coordinate, and implement projects and services and within deadlines.
I have strong analytical, critical thinking and problem solving skills.
I actively learn and adapt to new software and equipment technologies and public library and business applications.
I demonstrate leadership and/or work as part of a team. I act as person-in-charge and resolve situational issues at public service points or events as needed.

Required Education/Experience and License/Certifications
Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS) from an ALA accredited college or university required.
One year of related library experience working with community engagement, and programming preferred.
One year of professional leadership is preferred.
May require additional education in specialized area(s).
Valid driver’s license and proof of insurability.
Indiana Public Library Certification – Level 3 required. ALA-accredited MLS degree (or equivalent).
Supervision Received Receives general oversight. Uses a wide range of procedures and methods to meet job responsibilities. Refers only complex questions and problems to the manager; most often accompanied with information, data, and solutions.
Supervision or Leadership Exercised Provides leadership, assists in setting standards for areas of expertise, and is accountable for results. Participates in resolving challenges related to services and library-wide issues. Collaborates in the development of objectives and evaluating effectiveness, recommends changes to achieve goals. Participates in mentoring and assists with employee professional development. Participates in Person-in-Charge rotation.
Working Conditions
Regularly sitting and performing various repetitive actions and extensive use of keyboards, mice, monitors, and varied digital devices, requires using hands to finger, handling or feeling and repetitive motions.
Frequently standing, walking, moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, and moving from one work site to another.
Work has standard vision requirements; frequent speaking, vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
Occasional to frequent travel, entering and exiting vehicles, driving, moving, and carrying material to and from various locations.
Occasional moderate lifting (25 lbs.) and infrequent heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs.). Assistance with excessive loads is required.
Normal library working conditions; moderate exposure to office/maintenance chemicals (cleaning solutions, glue, paint, etc.).
Occasional exposure to fluctuations in interior conditions such as noise and temperatures.
May encounter exposure to outside elements, heat, cold, rain, snow, ice, etc. when traveling on library business.
Infrequent climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms.

MCPL employees may be assigned to work on weekdays, evenings or weekends. MCPL remains open during local academic breaks and we are unable to accommodate extended absences, including those associated with semester breaks. MCPL work schedules adjust in response to changing operational needs.
