The writer in this role enterprises content that aligns with our mission to inspire joy in living the gospel of Jesus Christ.Duties include finding, pitching, and writing short profiles on inspiring Latter-day Saints, interviewing article subjects for print or digital platforms, creating original thought pieces with editorialized perspectives on gospel topics, recapping important news of the Church, and pulling together Deseret Book product highlights.This is a dynamic position with daily writing and publishing deadlines for digital and monthly deadlines for print.The LDS Living Writer contributes to a collaborative growth environment and offers and receives focused feedback.
The anticipated period of employment is four months.**RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:****20% general content development.** The LDS Living Writer is a self-starter who is on the lookout for news, information, and stories that matter to the LDS Living audience and is excited about sharing them in inspiring ways.
Responsibilities include:* Understanding the target audience and what appeals to them.* Reading and listening to sources of LDS news and information, on a regular basis.* Researching story ideas and articulating story angles daily.* Pitching story ideas on a daily, weekly, and/or monthly basis.**80% writing and publishing.**
The LDS Living Writer enjoys sourcing and creating digital or print content to serve the LDS Living audience.Responsibilities include:* Writing and publishing 1-2 articles per day.* Following best practices for digital or print platforms, turning out articles that are easy to read and digest, with clear formatting, headings, and visuals.* Crafting engaging headlines and subject lines.* Scheduling and conducting interviews with article subjects.* Sourcing and creating compelling content that fits with established brand guidelines for structure, tone, and voice.* Editing and copy-editing others work.* Offering and receiving feedback on articles.* Reviewing analytics and article performance.* Occasionally working with outside writers to develop articles and provide feedback.**REQUIRED SKILLS****& QUALIFICATIONS:*** 3–5 years of experience in journalism, communications, or a related field. **(Resume and writing sample required.)*** Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, communications, or a related field.* Proficient with Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).* Willingness to learn publishing processes using Brightspot web interface.* Basic understanding of how to write for SEO.* Effectively write both short-form and long-form content.* Detail-oriented, with ability to analyze results, prioritize work and organize time.* Great team player who works well in a collaborative environment.* This is a hybrid position. The person in this role will be required to work three days per week (Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays) at Deseret Book’s corporate office in downtown Salt Lake City. The other days are worked remotely.
