General Purpose of Job The Grant Writer will research and write government proposals, United Way applications, and private foundation requests to fund current Salvation Army operations and create new funding for programs throughout the Northeast Ohio Division footprint. The Writer will submit timely reports to foundations, maintain gift acknowledgments, update foundation data, and manage a master grants calendar while reporting monthly attainment to the Associate Director and Director. The Grant Writer will collaborate closely with the Director, Associate Director, and key staff to support the overall fundraising success of the department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Government and Proposal Contracting

Research and identify opportunities for government funding for Corps in the Division.

Identify, define, and develop government funding sources to support existing and planned program activities and coordinate the development, writing, and submission of grant proposals to third‑party public entities.

Collect, analyze, and report data on the performance of program activities funded by third‑party public sources.

Maintain all files, records, and correspondence to comply with funder short‑ and long‑term requirements.

Foundations and Corporations

Research and identify opportunities for private foundation funding throughout the NEOSA Division.

Identify, define, and develop foundation funding sources to support existing and planned program activities and coordinate the development, writing, and submission of grant proposals to third‑party foundations and corporate entities.

Collect, analyze, and report data on the performance of program activities funded by third‑party foundations and government sources.

Maintain all files, records, and correspondence to comply with funder short‑ and long‑term requirements.

Additional Responsibilities

Assume other responsibilities as directed by the Director of Government and Foundation Relations, the Director of Development, and/or the General Secretary.

Assist in developing and maintaining comprehensive program assessments for NEOSA Division service programs.

Compose program descriptions for each program within the NEOSA Division that present funding opportunities and update as needed.

Ascertain specific funding needs within the NEOSA Division and track attainment of achieved funding support.

Prepare and maintain an up‑to‑date grant calendar charting submission dates, compliance needs, and reporting deadlines.

Meet with government agencies, foundations, and corporate personnel to cultivate revenue‑generating relationships.

Keep the Director of Government and Foundation Relations informed of all grant applications, proposals, and gifts received.

Meet with NEOSA Divisional Corps, Area Commands and administrative personnel to establish and maintain working relationships, gather operational information, execute needs assessments, and advance the grant management department’s success.

Perform special duties related to cultivating gifts, promoting NEOSA Division service programs, and supporting fundraising efforts.

Minimum Education and/or Experience

Bachelor’s degree.

Minimum 2 years of writing and/or non‑profit development experience.

A proven track record of successful grant writing.

Experience with government agency funding is desired.

Special Skills, Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Proficient in researching, interpreting, and analyzing diverse data and able to work collaboratively and independently to achieve stated goals.

Ability to relate professionally and effectively with key constituencies (internally and externally) and to handle sensitive situations and confidential information.

Follows policies and procedures, completes tasks correctly and on time.

Understanding of and appreciation for the mission of The Salvation Army with support of its goals and values.

Proficient in Microsoft Office and familiar with database applications.

Ability to prioritize and plan work activities; use time efficiently; anticipate resource needs; organize and schedule to avoid conflicts with others’ schedules and policy issues; develop realistic action plans.

Adapts to changes in the work environment and manages competing demands.

Ensures work responsibilities are covered when absent and arrives at meetings and appointments on time.

Responds to management direction, maintains a commitment to working extended hours as needed, and completes tasks on time or notifies appropriate personnel with an alternate plan.
