Champaign County Library . Under the supervision of the Access Services Manager, assists customers with checking out library materials and registering for library cards. Provides prompt and friendly service to customers of all ages at the Check‑out Desk, assisting them with a variety of tasks related to their use of library materials, answering questions and solving problems in a friendly and efficient way. Assists with check‑in, materials handling, and other tasks necessary to maintain efficiently the constant heavy flow of items through the department.
Schedule Is As Follows
Sundays 12‑6
Mondays 5‑9
Wednesdays 9‑3
Thursdays 9‑1
Open until filled, with first review of applicants on December 8, 2025.
Examples of Duties
Utilizes the integrated library system effectively and efficiently
Issues and updates library cards in‑person and online
Monitors the operation of the automated materials handling equipment
Monitors the operation of and assists customers with self‑check computers
Assists customers by telephone, email, and curbside
Checks in and inspects library materials
Collects fees, when applicable
Promotes library programs with customers
Greets customers and answers questions
Assists with shelving and pulls items requested by customers as needed
Maintains a clean and organized workspace
Assists with training of staff and volunteers
Participates in departmental and library‑wide training and activities, including technology and safety training
Provides excellent internal and external customer service
Other duties as assigned
Requirements
Ability to learn and perform routine library functions and procedures accurately and efficiently
Ability to learn and use the integrated library system
Ability to learn operation of and troubleshoot automated materials handling equipment
Ability to operate a cash register and apply money collecting procedures
Ability to issue guidance and ensure compliance with the Library’s Rules of Conduct and policies
Strong commitment to public service
Positive attitude and strong work ethic
Ability to work with library customers and staff in a friendly and efficient manner
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Proficiency in workplace productivity software, including skills in Microsoft Office Suite
Ability to maintain reliable attendance and regular schedule
Ability to maintain a varied schedule, including day, evening, and weekend rotations
Good vision and hearing to effectively engage with customers
Manual dexterity to operate computer and telephone equipment
Physical ability to regularly lift library materials weighing up to 40 lbs., and to push fully loaded carts of library materials, as well as bend and stretch to reach high and low shelves
Satisfactory pre‑employment background check
Acceptable Experience and Training
High school diploma or GED required
Associate degree or two years of college preferred
Customer service experience preferred
Public library experience preferred
Knowledge of Spanish and/or French is helpful
Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
Benefits The Champaign Public Library offers a comprehensive benefit package to regular full‑ and part‑time employees that includes paid sick leave, vacation, and nine paid holidays each year. Employees working 29 hours or less are not eligible for health insurance.
