The New York Times is looking for a leader to reimagine and guide its Newsroom Development and Support (NDS) team, a vital department that ensures the evolution of internal tools and practices, empowering journalists to produce their best work.

We need a dynamic person who can lead the transformation of those who create and support journalism. You should have a strong journalistic foundation, flexibility to oversee a team of journalists, technologists, trainers, and project managers, and a commitment to our mission of truth and understanding.

The NDS team consists of two groups: the editorial development arm designs training programs and curricula on writing, tagging, and more; the newsroom technology group focuses on publishing, planning, and data tools, and serves as the newsroom's liaison to product, design, and engineering teams.

This is an in‑office position based in New York City, requiring regular attendance at the office four days a week. Some flexibility to work remotely may be allowed per departmental guidance.

Responsibilities

Oversee a team that trains journalists, ensures optimal user experience of internal tools, and facilitates the creation of features that help measure progress toward goals.

Partner with specialized teams to deliver media training, including video and AI tools.

Demonstrate support for journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission of truth and understanding.

Report to a Deputy Managing Editor and Assistant Managing Editor.

Basic Qualifications

5+ years of experience managing people in media innovation portfolios.

Experience managing teams with differentiated skill sets.

Experience playing a key role in operational and technical transformation.

Demonstrated understanding of the technical foundations of our publishing toolkit.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working with teams that produce a range of media and collaborating across organizational levels.

Strong communication and collaboration skills.

The annual base pay range for this role is

$200,000 - $230,000 USD .
