A leader in aviation is seeking a Communications Designer with strong visual communication skills to join the Customer UX team. In this role, you’ll transform complex product concepts, research insights, and UX strategies into clear, compelling visual narratives that help teams and stakeholders align around a shared vision.

You’ll design digital presentations, iconography, diagrams, illustrations, and other visual assets that support storytelling across product, design, and research initiatives. This role sits within a UX organization and blends visual communication, digital design, storytelling, systems thinking, and narrative design to make the work more understandable, influential, and visually engaging.

What You’ll Do

  • Design compelling digital presentations for UX reviews, research readouts, and executive updates.
  • Translate complex product ideas into clear visual frameworks that articulate user problems, insights, and design direction.
  • Create iconography, diagrams, and illustrations used in UX documentation, design systems, and cross-functional storytelling.
  • Partner with Product Designers, Researchers, and Product Managers to visualize findings, frameworks, and strategies.
  • Maintain and extend visual storytelling standards within the design system.
  • Craft succinct digital narratives—storyboards, motion-supported concepts, short-form visual stories.
  • Build reusable templates and digital assets that improve team communication and presentation quality.
  • Support the UX organization as a visual communicator and digital design partner.

Top Skills We’re Looking For

  • Ability to craft succinct, digital-first visual stories—presentations, storyboards, diagrams, or motion-supported assets.
  • Excellent digital design fundamentals: layout, hierarchy, typography, and color.
  • Proficiency in Figma and Adobe Illustrator / Photoshop.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills across product and UX teams.
  • Experience with motion graphics or prototyping (e.g., After Effects, Principle) is a plus.

Qualifications

  • 2–5 years of experience as a Digital Designer, Visual Designer, Communication Designer, or similar.
  • Portfolio demonstrating digital presentation design, iconography, diagrams, UI-adjacent storytelling, etc.
  • Strong ability to translate abstract or complex ideas into simple, digital-first visuals.
  • Excellent understanding of visual fundamentals (typography, layout, color, pacing, hierarchy).
  • Experience collaborating within UX or product organizations is highly preferred.
  • Motion or interactive prototyping experience is a plus.

Logistics

  • Location: Chicago (Hybrid). On-site every Wednesday as needed.
  • Schedule: 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM CST
  • Travel: None expected; reimbursed if needed
  • Duration: 6-month contract to start with, with a very high potential for extension
  • Interview Process: 2+ virtual interviews with Senior Managers and the Director
  • Portfolio Required: Yes
  • Contract Type: W2 contract
  • Work Authorization: Must be eligible to work in the United States without Sponsorship.
  • Benefits: Health, Vision, Dental, 401 (k) options after 60 days of employment. No C2C.
  • Pay: $45-60 per hour, based on experience - W2 only

The specific compensation for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role as well as the cost of labor in the market; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment.
