Job Description

The Dallas Morning News is seeking an Assistant Breaking News Editor to provide editing support and leadership across the team, infusing urgency, immediacy and creativity. This editor will prepare stories for publication on multiple platforms, demonstrating an understanding of audiences. A strong candidate will be a talented communicator, collaborator and multitasker, and have robust editing skills along with an understanding of and ambition for accountability journalism. The editor must be well‑organized, a bridge‑builder in creating relationships, and have strong news judgment, a keen sense of urgency and immediacy, and be ready to lead reporters in tense, fast‑moving situations. They’ll also need to be adept at making smart decisions as news develops quickly. The manager will directly manage reporters.

The team covers everything from tragic events that have held Dallas and the country rapt to severe winter weather that has paralyzed North Texas, to daily trending stories on topics ranging from Mark Cuban to SpaceX to Dolly Parton. If you love leading journalists through rapidly evolving breaking news stories in the 24‑hour digital news cycle or helping them identify and explore interesting and noteworthy cultural, social or local trends, we want you to talk to you. We support the entire newsroom by helping swarm big news events and breaking news across beats, and you would have the opportunity to shepherd some people‑driven enterprise stories off breaking news events and help reporters dig into important topics in a state that has no shortage of news. An understanding and interest in audience behavior and newsroom analytics is important. You’ll need to think about SEO and newsgathering tactics that help grow our audience and position The Dallas Morning News as the leading news outlet in North Texas. Responsibilities and Duties

  • Take a hands‑on approach to breaking news across digital platforms and display a willingness to create content as needed.
  • Show strong organizational skills and the ability to multitask on deadline.
  • Plan for coverage with an eye toward distinctive journalism that differentiates our reporting from a list of competitors.
  • Generate content ideas that include an emphasis on the diversity of voices, stories, subjects and perspectives.
  • Ensure stories are reported fairly, accurately and thoroughly, with sharp, compelling writing.
  • Build trusting relationships with staffers and foster their growth and development.
  • Display exceptional news judgment with the ability to recognize the digital potential of stories that will resonate with our audience.
  • Build stories with links, tags, SEO best practices, attractive web headlines and multimedia when appropriate.
  • Monitor analytics for stories and work with reporters to suggest approaches for improvement.
  • Work with audience editors to evolve and shape coverage to deepen engagement with our digital audience.
  • Provide day‑to‑day leadership and supervision to assigned staff, ensuring operational goals and objectives are met effectively and efficiently.
  • Be responsible for all aspects of employee management, including recruitment, interviewing, selection, onboarding and retention.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations; provide constructive feedback and coaching to support employee development and accountability.
  • Administer progressive discipline and counseling as needed, in alignment with company policies and procedures.
  • Oversee scheduling, workload distribution and delegation of responsibilities to ensure balanced team performance and productivity.

Job Requirements

  • One to three years of experience in editing and/or copy editing.
  • Availability to work nights and weekends.

Skills

  • Excellent editing, time‑management, planning and prioritization skills.
  • Concrete understanding of SEO best practices and how to optimize a story’s digital presentation, including headlines, links, tags and visual elements.
  • Good news judgment, accuracy, speed, grammatical precision, a flair for headlines.
  • Proven ability to plan and work in advance.
  • Adapt quickly to changing technologies and workflows.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with colleagues.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field.
