Anticipated work schedule 8:00 am–3:45 pm with a 30‑minute lunch (7.25 h/day) Salary: $17.35–23.35 per hour (based on experience). Benefits and board‑paid IMRF. JOB SUMMARY Under the direct supervision of a certified staff member, the assistant supports certified professional employees and students in the media center to enable students to effectively use the instructional materials in the center, taking full advantage of library materials and resources. As needed, the position also supervises students during non‑instructional time (i.e., lunch and recess) or provides support in the classroom. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Assists students in locating reference and other instructional materials. Assists in cataloging and filing learning materials. Constructs, copies, distributes and uses educational materials. Serves as a reference guide for students. Arranges book displays, exhibits and other items to provide an appropriate learning resource environment and maximize students' interest in reading and learning. Assists with the selection of library materials and resources, and weeds out outdated materials and books. Assists in the utilization and maintenance of instructional and non‑instructional library equipment, including a personal computer if necessary. Supervises students during non‑instructional time (i.e., lunch and recess) or provides support in the classroom. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to: Must hold a valid IL paraprofessional license. Minimum of sixty (60) semester hours of college credit, an associate degree, or completion of the WorkKeys Paraprofessional Program with a certificate of proficiency. Prior experience working with children is desirable. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills to work with teachers, education support personnel, building administrators, and the general public. Enforces school regulations and policies in a professional manner. Maintains good working relationships with fellow employees and pupils. Can lift and carry up to 50 lbs. Can push/pull up to 10 lbs. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form. Ability to use personal computers and instruct students in their use (including creating documents, word processing, and using the Internet to conduct research). Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide, and perform complex arithmetic operations. Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals. Ability to maintain confidentiality of information regarding students, employees and others. Ability to follow directives of teacher, media specialist or other supervisor, and assist students with respect to instructional and non‑instructional tasks. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work. Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required. Effective writing and communication skills. Must be detail-oriented.
