A learning experience, KFYR offers daily hands‑on involvement with senior staff and covers local, state, and national political stories. The station emphasizes quick, fair, and accurate reporting. Job Summary/Description KFYR TV is looking for a political reporter who is passionate about covering local, state, and national political stories. The reporter should be a self‑starter with a proven track record in state politics, the ability to develop relationships with lawmakers and key staff, and strong research and storytelling skills. Coverage will be on‑air, live or taped, and on digital platforms. Duties / Responsibilities Collaborate daily with all stations to communicate coverage plans and newscast goals. Develop and maintain a network of sources and experts at state agencies and across all political parties. Travel throughout the state during election years with candidates, as directed by the news director. File regular FOIA requests (at least weekly) and manage them effectively. Track legislation, summarize and explain it to viewers in a conversational manner. Generate daily story ideas with statewide interest even when lawmakers are not in session. Operate as a digital‑first MMJ, stream news conferences, report on breaking news, and produce web and social stories daily. Apply strong news judgment and journalism ethics. Write, story, and report compellingly. Shoot, edit, and go live with your own stories. Ad‑lib during breaking news and report live effectively. Be willing to pivot for legislative sessions and breaking news; the primary schedule is Monday‑Friday. Qualifications / Requirements Bachelor’s or master’s degree in journalism or a related field. Minimum of 2 years of on‑air television news reporting experience. Basic experience with newsroom computer systems (ENPS) is preferred. Familiarity with AP Style for digital platforms and broadcast writing for television. Maintain assigned gear and use a company vehicle responsibly. Operate field camera, editing, and lighting equipment. Proficient with TVU technology and other mobile news‑gathering tools, including GoPros and TVU Anywhere App. Lift/carry equipment ranging from 35–50 lbs. Valid driver’s license and clean driving record. Represent all stations professionally on community, newsroom, and social media platforms. Desire to win, reflect on work, and apply feedback.
