Job Summary Records and transcribes verbatim court proceedings or other hearings before the courts. Stenographically records and transcribes verbal proceedings, maintains evidence, prepares official records, tests court recording equipment, transcribes, proofs, and prepares transcriptions for distribution, files transcripts, corresponds with attorneys, coaches interns, orders supplies, invoices fees, hires and supervises proofreaders, and provides real‑time feed to judges and counsel.

Bilingual Preference Bilingual court reporters preferred – Spanish.

Qualifications High School diploma or GED, completion of required apprentice and/or internship training in court reporting, and sufficient coursework to obtain certification as a court reporter from a recognized agency; or equivalent education and experience.

Professional Licensing Professional Certification as a Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) issued through the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA). Professional license as a Certified Court Reporter (CCR) issued by the Board of Court Reporting of the Judicial Council of Georgia. Certification must be maintained throughout employment.

Specific Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities

Accurately report court proceedings in real‑time at speeds of 180–300+ words per minute and translate take‑down from steno to English using computer‑aided transcription software.

Strong working knowledge of legal and medical terminology, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and basic mathematics.

Knowledge of laws, rules, and regulations governing court reporting, and compliance with the National Court Reporters Association professional standards.

Ability to use court reporting and transcription equipment, maintain exhibits and documentary evidence.

Effective communication with judges, coworkers, supervisors, and the public.

Examination The application will be evaluated for education and experience. Applicants must document the minimum knowledge, skills, and experience required. Official transcripts for all qualifying degrees/coursework are required at the time of employment.

Responsibilities

Record and transcribe verbatim court proceedings or other hearings.

Maintain evidence and prepare official records of reported proceedings.

Test court recording equipment regularly and ensure proper functioning before proceedings.

Transcribe, proofread, and prepare transcriptions for distribution.

File transcripts in civil and criminal proceedings with appropriate documentation.

Correspond with attorneys, court officers, and the public about requests for transcripts and exhibits.

Train court reporter interns and monitor their work.

Order and maintain court reporting supplies.

Manage exhibits during hearings and trials; inventory, catalog, file, box, record, and store exhibit evidence.

Invoice and collect fees for services rendered.

Hire and supervise independent copies and proofreaders for transcript production.

Provide real‑time feed to judges and counsel as required.
