Job Description The University of Florida Police Department invites applications for a vacant Police Communications Operator position. The employee in this position is in a probationary status and performs the tasks in a trainee capacity. The employee does not work independently and is under the full‑time supervision of a communications training officer. During this time the employee will learn to become proficient, and demonstrate that proficiency, in the following duties:

Operate communications command center providing radio communication support to sworn and non‑sworn department personnel.

Maintain radio/telephone communication link between field officers and base station, supervisors, emergency services, and other law enforcement agencies.

Receive and evaluate calls from the public requesting police assistance, of both emergency and non‑emergency natures, and quickly determine the appropriate response.

Input and transmit call information using computer‑assisted dispatch system or manual card system.

Refer callers to appropriate agencies or extensions.

Contact appropriate parties to notify of complaints and/or actions required.

Use computer‑assisted dispatch system to update and monitor law‑enforcement statuses, transmit requests for emergency services, and retrieve various data and records.

Coordinate the dispatching of resources between two or more agencies.

Perform a variety of records‑management duties including reviewing, entering, canceling and purging records.

Use various criminal‑justice and public‑safety computer systems to query and disseminate driver‑license records, vehicle registrations, stolen‑article files, warrants, criminal histories, and missing‑person listings.

Operate state and national computer databases for the FCIC/NCIC teletype equipment.

Compose and transmit messages to other agencies.

Monitor security or fire alarms activation on the Lenel OnGuard and Silent Knight alarm systems.

Obtain and/or verify other information required by law‑enforcement officers using computer systems, two‑way radio communications, and telephone.

Contact other public‑safety agencies to obtain assistance as needed.

Prepare various departmental logs, reports, and forms.

Attend training sessions for effective employee development.

Provide support during large events such as home football games (pre‑game and post‑game communications, stadium assignments, etc.).

Perform miscellaneous duties to address business needs and changing business practices.

Provide testimony and appear in judicial proceedings as a witness.

Advertised Salary PCO I: $20.79 /hour; PCO II: $22.87 /hour

Typical 2‑week schedule: 50+ hrs in week 1 and 20+ hrs in week 2 (overtime after 40 hrs per week). Base yearly earnings: $48,017.88 for PCO I, $52,819.67 for PCO II.

Minimum Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent and one year of relevant experience.

Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Public Safety Telecommunicator State Certification may substitute for an equivalent rate of experience.

Must successfully pass typing test with 35 CWPM.

Preferred Qualifications Education & Training

Florida Department of Health Public Safety Telecommunicator (911 Emergency Dispatcher) state certification.

State certification on the NCIC/FCIC computer system.

Knowledge

Knowledge of the appropriate methods of dealing with people in emergencies/crisis situations.

Knowledge of dispatch protocols, procedures and techniques used in the operation of the public safety communications center.

Knowledge of streets, buildings and UF geography.

Knowledge of complex electronic and telecommunications equipment commonly used in public safety.

Ability to stand and sit for prolonged periods.

Ability to stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, twist, and lift occasionally.

Ability to carry or push/pull light to moderate amounts of weight.

Ability to lift or move barricades occasionally.

Ability to operate office equipment that requires repetitive typing, hand movement, and fine eye/hand coordination.
