JOB SUMMARY
The Director of Health Promotion leads a multidisciplinary team, developing and implementing campus‑wide initiatives that promote student well‑being, reduce health risks, and foster equity, inclusion, and belonging. The role integrates public health, behavioral science, and health promotion theory to design population‑level strategies that improve student outcomes.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
- Salary: Full time, 12 months: $99,200 – $118,400 per year (or 11 months: $8,266 – $9,866 per month)
- Benefits: Full benefits coverage
SCHEDULE INFORMATION

JOB DUTIES
40% – Management and Strategic Leadership
- Provide strategic leadership for campus‑wide health promotion and policy‑level approaches.
- Advocate for policies and programs that support student health and well‑being.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, campus, and system policies (e.g., Clery Act, Federal Drug‑Free School Act).
- Direct evaluation and assessment to keep unit efforts data‑driven and responsive.
- Plan and implement health promotion communications, including health education materials, campaigns, and digital technology.
- Integrate multicultural diversity and social justice concepts into practice.
- Provide consultation on high‑risk scenarios and campus climate issues.
30% – Collaboration and Campus Engagement
- Represent SHS to the Office of the President monthly.
- Develop relationships with university constituents to build partnerships in a health‑promoting framework.
- Manage delivery of specialized training and lead departmental or campus committees.
- Facilitate wellness coaching with students and make referrals to campus and community resources.
- Oversee outreach to new students, including orientation, residential life, and student organizations.
30% – Administration and Supervision
- Oversee day‑to‑day departmental activity and unit operations.
- Lead hiring, supervision, training, coaching, evaluation, and professional development of staff.
- Maintain open communication and resolve staff conflicts per UCSC guidelines.
- Create quarterly and annual reports for Health Promotion initiatives.
- Manage internal administrative and financial processes; monitor budget and expenditures.
- Seek alternative funding such as grants and community partnerships.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in health promotion, public health, social work, educational leadership, higher education, or related field.
- Significant experience in health promotion or public health (typically 3–5 years).
- Proven ability to design, implement, and evaluate population‑level programs.
- Advanced presentation and communication skills for diverse audiences.
- Strong decision‑making, analytical, project‑management, and leadership skills.
- Excellent interpersonal, cross‑cultural communication, and student engagement skills.
- Leadership and supervisory experience with professional staff and students.
- Effective oral and written communication abilities.
- Knowledge of financial planning, budgeting, and fiscal accountability.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Advanced degree in health promotion, public health, social work, educational leadership, higher education, or related field.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Background and credentialing checks required.
- Employment misconduct disclosure process required.
- CPR/First Aid/AED certification within 60 days of hire.
- TB test within 60 days of hire.
- Completion of required training (UC compliance, HIPAA, etc.) within specified time frames.
- Occasional evening and weekend work availability.
- Travel to multiple work locations on and off campus required.
- Maintain professional appearance and conduct.
- Compliance with health safety requirements for health‑care workers.
- Compliance with the University's vaccination policy.
- Mandated Reporter responsibilities per the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act.
- Strict handling of sensitive information in accordance with data protection policies.
MISCONDUCT DISCLOSURE REQUIREMENT
Final candidates must disclose any final administrative or judicial decisions related to misconduct within the last seven years, or any ongoing or prior disciplinary proceedings.
