About the Agency Idaho Public Television is a PBS member station and Idaho's only locally owned and operated statewide broadcast network. It is a state agency under the Idaho State Board of Education. Our nonprofit arm, The Friends of Idaho Public Television, Inc., provides private support for our content production and educational efforts, enabling the creation of award‑winning long‑form documentaries, quality public affairs journalism, podcasts, educational digital lesson plans, and community events. Summary To produce and direct original content using single camera (EFP), studio, or remote equipment; coordinate program production; and perform related work. This person will primarily produce long‑form documentaries for programs such as Outdoor Idaho and Idaho Experience , but may also produce shorter news or web videos. The role requires both independent work and collaboration within a documentary production team, with frequent travel across the state to remote communities and back‑country settings. Responsibilities Producer Research original and assigned program proposals. Write and edit narratives and scripts for all platforms. Plan and coordinate documentary projects with the larger team. Prepare and conduct research and interviews. Prepare proposals including budgets, narratives, and intended audience. Research and organize available written materials, select talent and guests, and negotiate fees. Submit requests for artwork, photos, and facilities. Maintain records including copyrights, expense records, art and facilities requests, and required releases. Coordinate production elements with other departments. Coordinate and schedule location and studio recording. Prepare proposals for grant and program underwriting. Resolve problems concerning scheduling conflicts and allocation of resources and personnel. Director Direct and coordinate camera operators in blocking, composition, and sequence of shots; direct crew for studio and field‑based productions. Direct, coordinate, and block talent. Determine creative style or treatment of all components of a production. Operate broadcast/professional video production equipment such as tape and media‑based playback and record equipment, character generator, video production switcher, and audio mixer. Editor Determine workflow and format of productions. Operate videotape machines or file‑based video equipment. Edit with nonlinear software and hardware. Output or export final sequence to final format, either file or videotape; mix audio and correct video to meet FCC and broadcast specifications. Videographer Operate broadcast and media‑based field video cameras using professional standards. Minimum Qualifications Experience in a professional broadcast and/or video production environment. Research, write, and edit narratives and scripts for all platforms. Organize and schedule a media production team in studio or on remote locations. Direct single‑camera (documentary style) productions with understanding of studio and remote television productions using multiple cameras. Work within an established budget for television programs, maintaining records of expenses, time, personnel, facilities, and rights for final project reports. Operate professional studio and field broadcast and prosumer equipment, including field video cameras, audio equipment, lighting, and grip gear. Operate nonlinear editing hardware and software, mass storage for nonlinear uses, and video file transcoding. Understand operation of studio equipment such as video switchers. Preferred Qualifications Good knowledge and experience with camping and backcountry safety methods. Ability to navigate in remote places. Technical problem‑solving skills in broadcast environments. Familiar with Adobe Premiere Pro and the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite. Comfortable in political settings and environments. Familiarity with U.S. West issues, geography, history, politics and culture, as well as Idaho state and local government issues and operations. Familiarity with Idaho’s outdoor areas, rural areas and issues of importance to rural communities. Familiarity with and experience in adhering to journalistic practices and standards, extending to personal political and social media practices. Ability to work and complete tasks with high quality standards and minimal supervision.
