Join the County of San Mateo as a Court Reporter, helping to record verbatim court proceedings and provide essential support to judges across criminal, civil, family, and juvenile departments.
Base pay range: $137,134.40/yr – $137,134.40/yr
Responsibilities
Attend courtroom sessions to record all proceedings.
Prepare verbatim transcripts of testimony, objections, rulings, pleas, and sentences.
Read aloud court reporting notes upon request.
Certify the accuracy of court transcripts.
Prepare indexes of witnesses and exhibits and file official transcripts with the court.
Operate office equipment, including computers and printers.
Respond to requests and inquiries from litigants.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Licensure/Certification: Valid Certified Shorthand Reporter License issued by the State of California.
Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Knowledge of courtroom procedures, legal terminology, and records management practices.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Proficiency with real‑time reporting equipment and standard office equipment.
Application Requirements
Open and promotional: anyone with a California Shorthand Reporter license may apply. Current County of San Mateo employees with at least six months (1040 hours) of continuous service in a classified regular, probationary, or extra‑help/limited term position will receive five points added to their final passing score.
The application process includes: a scored Training and Experience (T&E) evaluation based solely on supplemental questionnaire responses (weight: 100%). Candidates who pass the T&E evaluation are placed on an eligible list; the top candidates are invited for an interview. Secondary screening may involve an education and experience appraisal or other examinations. All examinations are conducted in San Mateo County; applicants are responsible for their own expenses.
