Job Summary/Description

The number one station in Roanoke, VA, is looking for a digital anchor/executive producer who will anchor breaking news updates on‑air, online, and on‑stream. This person will also coordinate and schedule daily content on WDBJ's streaming channel.

Duties/Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Gather and provide news and information in the most accurate, appealing, timely, and creative way.
  • Plan and perform on‑set interviews, reporting hard news, breaking news, severe weather, and live demonstrations.
  • Demonstrate sound news judgment and the ability to tell stories in a clear, informative manner.
  • Develop, investigate, write, report, and edit stories for streaming content and newscasts.
  • Attend editorial meetings; participate in the story selection process and contribute story ideas.
  • Write, edit, and post website stories prior to airing of the television version, and update web stories regularly.
  • Use social media outlets to interact with viewers and to post content and promotional material on a daily basis.
  • Lead and mentor reporters, producers, and videographers.
  • Attend/host/speak at community service, schools, and community events; meet and greet viewers.
  • Follow clothing and appearance guidelines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Various shift work may be required; work evenings, weekends, and holidays as necessary.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Be able to write clearly and accurately.
  • Must possess excellent interview and conversational writing skills.
  • Ability to shoot and edit video; create personalized stories for the web.
  • Able to produce and post content to our websites.
  • Able to use social media outlets to engage viewers.
  • Strong emphasis on professional social media skills as related to journalism.
  • Must be able to work well under pressure and with limited supervision.
  • 3 or more years of reporting and/or anchoring is preferred.
  • Experience with and intermediate knowledge of newsroom software, such as ENPS.
  • Basic computer skills are required.
  • Clear, accurate news writing and research skills.
  • Must possess excellent interview and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and work well under pressure.
  • Strong initiative and attention to detail required.
  • Excellent live reporting skills and strong on‑camera presentation skills required.
  • Compelling storyteller, able to tell complicated stories “live”, and ad‑lib when necessary.
  • Maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving in a manner that will work well with co‑workers, supervisors, and viewers.
  • Keeping up with national and local news is required.
  • Knowledge of web posting software, producing content for the web, and other platforms.
  • Ability to enterprise local hard news stories, update stories several times a day, and conduct online research.
