Communications Officer

Handles emergency law enforcement communications via radio dispatch, emergency and non-emergency telephone calls, and utilizes local/national computers. Receives, screens and monitors 9-1-1 emergency and non-emergency calls from the public and other police/public safety agencies by radio or telephone; categorizes and prioritizes calls. Maintains communications with all parties involved in emergency situations; conveys information to/from emergency personnel, general, public, public safety agencies, utilities, businesses and other personnel within the department. Prioritizes and dispatches appropriate personnel to incident locations; monitors radio traffic and maintains awareness of activities. Conducts data inquiries into National/Florida State Crime Information Center System (FCIC/NCIC). Must be able to effectively communicate while working in a stressful environment. Handles confidential information. Incumbent must follow agency disciplinary guidelines, PBSO General Orders as well as Communications guidelines for attendance and punctuality. Performs other duties as assigned.
High school diploma or GED.
3 years 9-1-1 dispatching experience in law enforcement, fire, or EMS.
Experience working in an environment which requires multi-tasking.
Must type minimum 45 CWPM.
The position requires the ability to utilize computer monitors, equipment, telephones and must be able to type.
Must be able to work at a fast pace with little to no control over the incoming workload.
Must be able to maintain intense concentration and attention for extended periods of time.
Must have customer service experience.
Must successfully pass computer-based Communications testing in order to proceed to the oral interview.
Position requires minimum three (3) year commitment to the division after successful completion of training.
Upon successful completion of the PBSO Communications academic classroom, the Florida State Exam for Public Safety Telecommunicator must be taken and passed, if applicant does not already possess a valid Florida certification. This testing will be administered by the State of Florida, Department of Health.
