Mechanical Designer – Viking Pump, Inc.
Viking Pump, Inc. invites applications for the Mechanical Designer position. This role focuses on new product development, design improvements, and modification of specialty pump designs. The successful candidate will work in a collaborative team environment and provide technical support across design and manufacturing disciplines.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Analyze job assignments and determine resource needs to meet project due dates.
Perform design calculations under guidance using established engineering practices.
Ensure all design work meets relevant industry standards, particularly safety and quality.
Continuously improve design capabilities through study, observation, and evaluation.
Create and process Engineering Change Notices (ECNs) and document any changes to part numbers and Bill of Materials.
Maintain coding and structure in JDE for all parts and assign material codes, model numbers, and part number families.
Assist manufacturing with development of patterns, tooling, and related equipment needed to produce new products.
Apply creative thinking and basic engineering principles to convert ideas into workable units.
Work directly with Project Engineers to develop design concepts and solutions.
Select and recommend materials and components.
Analyze field, lab, manufacturing, or quality reports to recommend changes or redesigns to solve problems.
Develop test plans for product development and design validation, write lab testing work orders, oversee testing, and document results.
Travel as required by work.
Maintain a safe and clean working environment following applicable procedures.
Collaborate with customers, suppliers, field personnel, and internal Viking departments.
Education and Experience Requirements
Two to three years of 3D CAD modeling/drafting training or experience.
Two‑year Mechanical Engineering Technology degree or a minimum of five years of relevant experience.
Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Technology or Engineering preferred.
Other Special Requirements
Organize design efforts, keep orderly documentation, and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
Apply good judgment and technical insight to problem‑solving.
Experience in product design, pumps, or fluid‑flow systems preferred.
Self‑driven with minimal supervision.
Team‑oriented and collaborative.
Highly effective written, verbal, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.
Computer Skills
Proficient in 3D CAD modeling and drafting software, preferably SolidWorks.
Proficient with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook).
Work Environment Requirements
Ability to move within office and manufacturing facilities, write by hand and use a keyboard.
Effective communication by speech and hearing via phone and in person.
Visual acuity required for close detail work and computer use.
Experience in general manufacturing, warehouse, and office environments.
Organizational Relationships
Communicate effectively with customers, suppliers, and corporate personnel at all levels.
Frequent contact with suppliers, customers, and internal/external Viking personnel.
