Kresge Library's Service Desk is always staffed and is often the first contact that library users have with the library. Student assistants must represent the library in a positive manner. Punctuality, dependability, and an ability to deliver excellent customer service are essential components of this position. Student assistants can expect to answer questions, take phone calls, circulate library materials, monitor the library building, and assist with special projects as needed.
Cover letters are requested. These do not need to be lengthy, but they should talk specifically about why you are interested in working in a library.
Requirements
Willingness and ability to work an established schedule Accuracy with alpha/numeric sequences Ability to use computers and library automation system. Ability to work without close supervision. Good interpersonal communication skills. Capable of reading labels for shelving and shelf-reading. Physical ability to stand, bend and lift books. Ability to move loaded book carts. Sufficient English language skills to understand and follow verbal and written instructions and communicate clearly with library users. Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Assist library patrons at the Service Desk Lend and receive library materials Adhere to library policies and procedures Explain policies and procedures to patrons Answer and transfer incoming calls or take messages Use the library catalog and OU website to help patrons Locate and retrieve items in Reserve, Interlibrary Loan or other special Hold Locations Search for and retrieve items held in the library’s stacks Shelve library material and shelf-read for correctness Shift library materials as directed Direct patrons to other departments/locations on campus Assist in opening and/or closing library as needed Assist in maintaining the appearance of the library Report problems to a supervisor Work weekend and late shifts Be customer oriented, pleasant, courteous and approachable Work well both unsupervised and as part of a team
