The Pasqual Maragall Foundation was created in 2008 with the mission of promoting and developing excellent biomedical research. The Foundation's research is conducted at the Barcelonaßeta Brain Research Center (BBRC), a research center established with the participation of Pompeu Fabra University and "la Caixa."
The Pasqual Maragall Foundation's vision is to achieve "A future without Alzheimer's," within the framework of active and healthy aging associated with positive experiences and freedom from problems and cognitive decline. To this end, BBRC research focuses on the primary and secondary prevention of Alzheimer's disease, which is made possible through the participation of thousands of people who voluntarily contribute to scientific studies aimed at achieving far fewer people with the disease in the near future.

The Pasqual Maragall Foundation is a young, established, and growing foundation that, together with the BBRC, currently has more than 250 members. The FPM team encompasses diverse areas of infrastructure, systems, finance, purchasing, human resources, communications, advocacy, and philanthropic fundraising. The BBRC's scientific team is comprised of researchers and professionals in the fields of medicine, biology, psychology, and nursing, among others. All of this exists within a dynamic environment where ongoing challenges are part of the Foundation's scope of work.
Position Description
The Pasqual Maragall Foundation is looking for a
Head of Scientific Communication
to join the Communication Area, serving both the Foundation and its research center, the Barcelonaβeta Brain Research Center (BBRC).
The selected person will lead the science communication team and will work in alignment and collaboration with the rest of the team to ensure the consistency and impact of the scientific narrative across all channels and projects.
Their mission will be to design, develop and execute the scientific communication strategy of both entities, ensuring that research and scientific dissemination contribute to generating reputation, notoriety and social impact, thus consolidating their position as a reference in the field of neurodegenerative diseases and neurosciences, and providing innovative solutions and scalable processes that contribute to achieving the objectives of the strategic plans of the Foundation and the BBRC.
Main duties of the position
Planning and strategy
Design the BBRC's scientific communication plan in alignment with the strategic objectives of the Pasqual Maragall Foundation.
Define and promote the BBRC's scientific and institutional positioning strategy at the national and international level, ensuring brand consistency and the projection of the center as a benchmark in research on Alzheimer's, neurodegenerative diseases and neurosciences.
Define the narratives and key messages about the research and scientific results of the center, ensuring their effective dissemination through internal and external channels.
Corporate Communications
Develop and implement the scientific communication plan in accordance with the strategic objectives of the Foundation and the BBRC, ensuring its correct execution within the deadlines and with the allocated resources.
To fulfill the BBRC's scientific communication objectives defined by the area, reinforcing the reputation, visibility and social impact of the center's research.
Plan and coordinate research content, corporate materials and outreach materials.
Ensure the quality, consistency, and impact of all materials produced by the team or by external providers.
To enhance the visibility of scientific spokespeople and their participation in forums, meetings and media.
To respond to the needs of scientific communication, ensuring consistency with institutional communication, brand identity and strategic messages.
Design and implement the multi-channel scientific communication strategy, ensuring rigorous and attractive dissemination of research results through media, digital channels, publications and outreach activities.
Promote participation in scientific outreach initiatives and encourage the presence of researchers in activities and media.
Advise research teams on their public communication and support the preparation of presentation materials or project justifications.
Science Office
To act as a bridge between research and communication, facilitating the transmission of scientific information to the entire organization and to different audiences.
Participate in internal committees and respond to the scientific communication needs of the different areas.
Develop scalable processes and procedures that facilitate the management and execution of scientific communication between the Foundation and the BBRC.
Promote rigorous, understandable and approachable communication that supports the objectives of brand awareness, customer loyalty and acquisition.
Press and Public Relations Office
Design and execute the communication strategy for scientific articles and projects, generating relevant content (press releases, videos, infographics, reports, articles, digital content, etc.).
Manage the communication activities of national and international projects in coordination with the Scientific Coordination area and the Project Office.
Oversee the creation of content for the organization's various communication channels.
Coordination and processes
Coordinate the tasks of communication specialists linked to scientific projects or institutional materials, ensuring coherence, quality and alignment with strategic objectives.
Supervise the writing, design and production of scientific and corporate communication materials (magazine, annual report, press kits, institutional videos, photoshoots, etc.).
To devise, develop and implement communication campaigns to raise awareness about research and pathologies, both continuously and on relevant dates or events (for example, World Alzheimer's Day).
Coordinate the production of presentations and materials for institutional and scientific stakeholders.
Lead the development of reports and indicators (KPIs) to assess the impact of actions and guide strategic decision-making.
Coordinate and monitor external scientific communication agencies or providers, ensuring consistency with the BBRC's editorial and brand guidelines.
Manage sensitive communication situations or issues related to scientific projects, in coordination with the Management and the Corporate Communication area.
Collaborate with research, project management, fundraising and innovation teams, ensuring that the communication of results and progress is rigorous and aligned with institutional values.
Participate in the definition and application of scientific communication policies, material approval protocols, and style guides.
Coordinate with other areas, especially Institutional Relations, Social Area and Fundraising, to ensure integrated and coherent communication.
Digital communication
Develop a digital communication strategy for the BBRC in coordination with the digital team of the Pasqual Maragall Foundation.
Manage and implement the digital communication plan on the BBRC's social media networks.
Monitor the content of the BBRC website and coordinate the implementation of new digital resources (new website, landing pages, etc.) when necessary.
Requirements and experience
Degree or Bachelor's degree in Communication, Journalism, Health Sciences or related areas.
Additional training, preferably postgraduate or master's degree in scientific communication.
Minimum of 5 years' experience in positions of responsibility in scientific communication, in research, health, science environments or in specialized agencies.
Solid knowledge of the functioning of the scientific system, including publications, ethics, dissemination and knowledge transfer.
Mastery of the media environment, digital channels and the main tools of scientific storytelling.
Ability to translate complex scientific concepts into clear, accessible, and inspiring messages for diverse audiences.
Experience in managing communication projects with multiple stakeholders and channels.
Knowledge of the biomedical research ecosystem and of public and private funding mechanisms.
Strategic vision and ability to align communication objectives with brand and institutional positioning goals.
Experience in managing teams, suppliers, and complex projects.
Familiarity with digital environments and online content strategies (SEO, social media, newsletters, analytics).
Knowledge of graphic design and digital communication tools (Adobe, Mailchimp, video editing and social media).
