Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldnt work together. The Role

Square Banking exists to give small businesses the financial tools they need to thrive helping them sell, save, spend, and borrow as fast as they need to. By connecting payments, bank tools, and cash flow in one seamless experience powered by AI, we empower sellers to move money confidently, access capital easily, and grow their business on their own terms.

Were looking for a Head of Design to lead the next chapter of Square Bankings growth. As the design leader for one of Squares most strategically important organizations, youll shape how millions of businesses interact with their money every day. Youll set the vision for how design, brand, and creative work together to make Square Banking a trusted, differentiated, and deeply human experience across every product, platform, and touchpoint.

Youll report to the Head of Design for Square, and be a key member of the Banking leadership team alongside peers in Product, Engineering, and Marketing leading a team of 10+ product designers.

You Will

  • Set the vision and raise the bar. Define the creative direction and design standards for Square Banking, ensuring every experience from onboarding to ongoing engagement feels clear, connected, and unmistakably Square.
  • Lead with trust and craft. Create the conditions for exceptional work by fostering psychological safety, inspiring ambition, and modeling design excellence across brand, product, and research.
  • Drive companydefining initiatives. Serve as a trusted partner to senior leadership in shaping the strategy for Square Banking and influencing the broader design direction across Square.
  • Scale impact through systems. Build design frameworks, rituals, and structures that allow teams to move fast without sacrificing quality. Promote cohesion across disciplines and regions as Square Banking expands globally.
  • Champion customercentric thinking. Keep small business owners at the heart of every decision, balancing business goals with empathetic storytelling and worldclass design execution.
  • Shape the future of intelligent design. Integrate automation and AIdriven insights to streamline workflows, enhance creativity, and deliver smarter customer experiences.

You Have

  • 15+ years of experience in design management, both leading and building product design teams.
  • A record of delivering transformative, highimpact work products that influence company strategy, elevate brand perception, and drive measurable outcomes.
  • Experience leading design at scale across multiple product lines, regions, and platforms, creating cohesion while honoring local nuance.
  • A portfolio that demonstrates vision, taste, and range spanning product experience, marketing, and innovation.
  • A proven ability to partner closely with Product, Engineering, and Marketing executives to shape roadmaps, define strategy, and align teams around shared goals.
  • Strength in developing and scaling organizations, mentoring leaders, and fostering a culture of excellence and inclusion.
  • Comfort working at both strategic altitude and detail depth you can define a multiyear design vision and also ensure final implementations meet the highest craft standards.
  • Passion for systems thinking, storytelling, and the customer journey, with the instinct to simplify complex ideas into intuitive, delightful experiences.
  • An evolving perspective on designs role in AI, automation, and emerging technologies and how these can enhance creative output and customer value.

Compensation

Block takes a marketbased approach to pay, and pay may vary depending on your location. U.S. locations are categorized into one of four zones based on a cost of labor index for that geographic area. The successful candidates starting pay will be determined based on jobrelated skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future.
