Overview The US Daily Mail is seeking an experienced, highly organised and dynamic
Deputy Consumer Editor
to help lead our consumer desk. This role is central to delivering sharp, engaging and impactful journalism across business, personal finance, consumer affairs and real estate. The successful candidate will balance writing and reporting with team management, supporting the Consumer Editor in the smooth day‑to‑day running of the department and taking charge in their absence.
Key Responsibilities Editorial Leadership & Daily Operations Support the Consumer Editor in managing the daily workflow of the consumer department, stepping in to oversee the team when required. Attend twice-daily news conferences and contribute to planning across daily, weekend and long‑term coverage. Help shape the daily news list and weekend features, contributing ideas and editorial direction.
Reporting & Writing Produce high-quality news stories, features and guides across consumer, business, personal finance and property topics. Deliver exclusives, off-diary stories, deep‑dive Mail+ content and rapid responses to breaking news. Build and maintain a strong roster of sources — including company representatives, analysts, insiders and experts — through regular communication, networking and on‑the‑ground meetings.
Editing & Production Edit, fact‑check and support reporters to tight daily deadlines, ensuring accuracy, clarity and high editorial standards. Collaborate with photo, graphics and video teams to enhance storytelling and presentation. Coordinate with page editors to secure effective homepage and app placement.
Audience & Strategy Closely track audience data and analytics to understand content performance. Use insights to inform commissioning, planning, headline strategy and overall audience growth.
Key Skills & Experience Strong experience in a national newsroom. Excellent news judgment with the ability to spot, shape and elevate compelling stories. Clear, fast and accurate writer with strong numeracy skills. Proven ability to develop and sustain robust industry contacts and off‑record sources. Highly organised with the ability to manage multiple deadlines and shifting priorities. Effective communicator who can articulate stories, angles and editorial priorities clearly. Creative, energetic and full of ideas. Experience editing or running a news list. Confidence using analytics tools and applying data insights to improve coverage. Background in consumer, personal finance or business journalism. Experience producing off-diary or long‑form investigative content.
This is an in‑office position, based in New York City and includes attendance in the office five days a week.
