Communications Officer
Department: Public Safety (QUB)

Location: Corvallis, Oregon
Salary Range: $26.22 – $35.89
Position Summary The Department of Public Safety is seeking up to two full‑time, 12‑month Communications Officers.
Candidates will provide investigational and administrative support to campus police, operate the Secondary Public Safety Answering Point for emergency and non‑emergency calls, and manage mission‑critical communications equipment.
Key Responsibilities
Radio Operations (20%)
Monitor and operate radio console across multiple frequencies
Dispatch police and public safety officers
Communicate status updates
Phone Operations (20%)
Operate multi‑line telephone software
Receive, process, and transfer emergent/non‑emergent calls and service requests
Communicate with university personnel
Data Entry & Information Queries (30%)
Use CAD, RMS, LEDS/NCIC, Laserfiche, and other software systems
Maintain a computerized log of all incidents and contact information
Alarms (20%)
Monitor burglary, fire, and maintenance alarms and take prescribed action
Confidentiality & Reporting (5%)
Relay crime and incident information from other agencies
Clery crime and fire reporting
Maintain high levels of confidentiality
Other Duties (5%)
Additional tasks as assigned
Qualifications
Required
High school diploma or equivalent
LEDS certification or ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
DPSST Telecommunications certification or ability to obtain within 18 months of hire
Proficiency with computers and standard office programs (Excel, Word, email, web applications)
Typing proficiency of at least 40 WPM
Strong oral and written communication skills
Ability to follow policies, directives and procedures
Critical thinking and problem‑solving skills
Willingness to attend and complete required training
Knowledge of OSU–DPS administrative policies, procedures, rules and guidelines (within 18‑month probationary period)
Commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive work environment
Success in a proficiency test (as applicable)
Pass a comprehensive pre‑employment background assessment (criminal history, driving records, medical exam, psychological evaluation, drug screening, FBI fingerprint check)
Preferred (Optional)
One year of previous experience in a Communications Center or Call Center
Background Checking Requirements All candidates must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per university standard 05‑010 et seq.
Background checks include a Federal Bureau of Investigation fingerprint check, employment history, education, and personal references.
Additional periodic checks may apply for individuals previously in youth programs.
Nuclear Regulatory Commission background check requirements as described apply to this role.

Rotating and variety of shifts: day, swing, graveyard; 8, 10 or 12‑hour shifts; possible longer hours during emergencies or increased workload
Shift coverage includes 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, weekends and holidays; work during inclement weather and natural disasters may be required
