About this opportunity Ball State University is seeking a full‑time Telecommunications Officer to assist the Department of Public Safety. Candidates must have current authorization to be employed in the United States without employer sponsorship.

What You’ll Do And What You’ll Bring Position Function Serve the public and facilitate the Department of Public Safety’s response to the public’s call for service; monitor the safety and well‑being of officers in the field; respond to emergency and non‑emergency situations.

Duties and Responsibilities

Receive all telephone calls (911, 5‑1111 or other lines routed to the Ball State Police Department as required) for assistance and/or service from the public and communicate those calls to the police officers and parking enforcement officers in the field; maintain communications with officers in the field for the purpose of monitoring their personal safety while on the call; enter all information regarding dispatched calls and encountered subjects (Jackets for individuals and businesses) in the computer‑aided dispatch/records system.

Maintain telephone and radio communications with other public service agencies in the area (Muncie Police, Delaware County Police, Indiana State Police, Indiana State Excise Police, Muncie Fire Department, Delaware County EMS/paramedics, IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital police, and area wreckers/tow service companies); monitor and communicate with the public via all campus emergency phones on campus grounds and within campus elevators.

Conduct electronic communications/transactions with the state and federal system (IDACS/NCIC) where there is lawful probable cause for the transaction; determine valid drivers, licensed vehicles, wanted persons, criminal histories, stolen items, etc.; maintain proficiency in IDACS and NCIC rules and regulations.

Monitor the university’s JC85/Metasys alarm systems; include burglar and/or intrusion alarms, personal/office threat alarms, fire/smoke detector alarms, building water, temperature, armed intruder and call boxes; monitor closed‑circuit surveillance cameras in university parking lots; monitor weather for activation of weather siren as needed; serve as the first line of activation for emergencies requiring use of the RAVE mass notification system; monitor PDDISPATCH email for CSA reports and coordinate necessary response.

Monitor police department building surveillance and electronic door access; greet walk‑in public during non‑business hours; facilitate and review online parking payments during non‑business hours to accommodate boots/boot release and tows; monitor security of the building via CJIS security log requirements.

Perform specialized duties and be responsible for unique specialty areas such as serving as IDACS coordinator/assistant coordinator/operator, serving as EMD certified instructor/operator ensuring proper certifications and protocols as necessary; report observed console, car and portable radio maintenance needs; train new dispatch officers; provide New World information as necessary from the Delaware County New World system; monitor and make recommendations regarding the development of information in the New World CAD system and serve as the primary contact during the shift for the New World CAD system.

Serve as backup for city/county 911 overflow calls.

Provide call data research for agency and BSU administration as necessary; provide supplemental information for police reports as needed.

Maintain/monitor trespass warnings for the university; enter/monitor BOLO file in CAD.

Work security assignments at special events (commencement, ball games, concerts, etc.) as required or requested.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Maintain regular and predictable attendance.

Minimum Qualifications

Up to eighteen months of education beyond high school or equivalent.

State IDACS certification with renewal every two years.

Complete division training within six months of employment.

Three months through one year of experience in police, fire, or other communications services (hotline, dispatch); easily‑understood speaking voice and ability to remain calm during emergency situations.

Preferred Qualifications

Associate’s degree.

Over one year of dispatch/communications experience; IDACS certified; knowledge of BSU and Muncie streets, buildings, and geography.
