Pay Range
Pay Range $1,440 - $1,550 per credit hour
Salary offers at Syracuse University will be based on education, experience, and relevant skills, as well as the academic or professional discipline of the position in the context of the home department, school, or college. Salary offers may also be influenced by prior relevant work or industry experience, where applicable. Faculty pay ranges are for 8.5 months’ salary unless otherwise specified.

Job Description
The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University seeks an instructor to teach SMC 300 Special Topics – Introduction to Sports Photography on Thursdays 5:00pm-7:45pm during the Spring 2026 semester (3 credits).
Course Description
This course introduces students to the technical and creative foundations of sports photography, emphasizing how to capture movement, emotion, and energy in dynamic sports environments. Students will learn the fundamentals of camera operation, exposure, focus, and composition as they relate to fast‑paced action.
Through lectures, demonstrations, and hands‑on shooting assignments, students will develop skills in timing, anticipation, and storytelling through still images. The course also explores ethical and editorial considerations in sports photography, covering topics such as access, diversity of representation, and visual integrity. By the end of the semester, students will have built a strong foundation for photographing sports and other action‑driven subjects across print and digital platforms.
Qualifications
Job Specific Qualifications
Teaching experience preferred.
Professional experience in photography, sports media, or photojournalism preferred.
Strong knowledge of digital camera systems and photographic workflow.
Proficiency with Adobe Lightroom or equivalent editing software.
Responsibilities
It is understood that teaching assignments may include the following:
Developing and/or updating a detailed course syllabus and project assignments.
Ordering or coordinating access to required equipment and materials.
Preparing and delivering lectures, demonstrations, and critiques.
Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours.
Presenting instruction aligned with course objectives and learning outcomes.
Supervising student work during field and practice sessions.
Submitting mid‑semester progress reports and final grades per University regulations.
Providing timely, constructive feedback and evaluating student assignments.
Promoting ethical and inclusive visual storytelling.
Collecting departmentally sanctioned student evaluations.
Physical Requirements
Ability to instruct the class on the days and times it is designated to meet.
Ability to hold office hours on campus.
Ability to grade all assignments and examinations.
Tools/Equipment
Ability to operate standard classroom instructional technology, which may include computer, projector, document camera, etc.
