Metadata Librarian – Library of the University of California, Davis
Salary range: $80,349 – $116,671 per year. (RANK: Associate Librarian)

Position Description The UC Davis Library seeks a forward‑looking and entrepreneurial professional to advance discovery of library resources, collection management, and data curation. Reporting to the Head of Content Support Services, the Metadata Librarian will lead the library’s transition to Linked Data by developing metadata best practices, overseeing cataloging projects, and training staff.
Responsibilities
Create metadata for diverse materials; oversee quality control of cataloged content.
Resolve complex metadata and database quality issues referred by colleagues.
Provide training and consultation to colleagues, especially the Metadata Creation and Discovery Unit.
Set priorities for metadata creation and processing of new materials in partnership with the Head of Content Support Services.
Serve as the library's liaison to NACO and CONSER.
Design, oversee, and participate in bibliographic database cleanup and enrichment projects.
Manage large- scale relocation projects, updating records to contemporary standards.
Lead the transition to a Linked Data metadata environment, including testing cataloging interfaces and training staff in post-MARC production.
Oversee or participate in other Linked Data initiatives (e.g., faculty profile database).
Maintain knowledge of current resource description standards and tools.
Contribute to library work through committees, task forces, and collaborative projects.
Participate in national and international professional organizations and activities.
Engage in research, scholarship, or creative activity and/or teaching as an academic appointee.
Carry out other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Basic qualifications (required)
Graduate degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent.
Minimum five years’ professional metadata creation experience (RDA, AACR2R, LCSH, LCC, MARC 21).
Experience creating/editing NACO records and authority control processes.
Eagerness to explore and incorporate new technologies (Linked Data, RDF, etc.).
Knowledge of emerging standards, tools, and developments related to resource description and access (BIBFRAME, RDA/RDF, VIAF, ORCID).
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a dynamic, culturally diverse environment.
Ability to plan, implement, and coordinate multiple projects.
Analytical and problem‑solving skills in a fast‑paced, production-oriented environment.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Strong commitment to professional development.
Comfort with ambiguity.
Service orientation and interest in supporting information users.
Preferred qualifications (not required)
Experience with official RDA guidelines.
Proficiency with metadata analysis and transformation tools (OpenRefine, MarcEdit) and scripting languages (Python, XSLT).
Experience using OCLC cataloging services and tools.
Experience with the Alma library resource management system.
Working knowledge of at least one non-English language.
Experience creating controlled vocabularies.
Experience cataloguing within a consortium environment.
Experience with non-MARC metadata standards.
Experience using and integrating RESTful APIs in metadata workflows.
Familiarity with semantic technologies (RDF, ontologies, SPARQL).
Mentoring library school interns.
Evidence of inclusive environment commitment.
Ability to meet UC criteria for appointment and advancement in the librarian series.
Demonstrated record of research, scholarship, or creative activity for an academic appointment.
