Overview Under the supervision of the Executive Director of Advancement Communications, the Sr. Associate Director/Writer serves as the division’s senior writer and editor. This role develops compelling print and digital content that strengthens donor, alumni, and community engagement, showcases the impact of philanthropy, and supports University Advancement priorities. The position collaborates across Advancement teams and with institutional partners to deliver high-quality narrative storytelling, persuasive messaging, and versatile written materials. While the writer will contribute to campaign‑related communications as needed, most work will focus on ongoing advancement initiatives, stewardship, and broad constituent engagement.

Projected salary: $85,000 – $100,000.

Responsibilities

Develop strategic collateral and messaging in collaboration with Advancement teams, Alumni Relations, Annual Giving, Stewardship, Events, schools, and other institutional partners, ensuring consistency with university brand and priorities.

Assume the lead editorial role in conceptualizing, researching, writing and editing a wide variety of content generated by and on behalf of the division. Special emphasis on feature articles (print, web), alumni event speech/script writing, promotional materials, newsletters, brochures, direct mail appeals, invitations, presentation materials, press releases, donor correspondence, reports, video recording scripts, and other outreach collateral.

Edit and proof diverse print and digital materials—including donor correspondence, emails, brochures, collateral, proposals, stewardship reports, event scripts, newsletters, and web features—to ensure alignment with university voice and style. May contribute to campaign materials such as case statements, proposals and leadership communications.

Perform research of source materials and Raiser’s Edge database to obtain and verify facts; analyze sources for accuracy and most effective approach; interview donors, faculty, students and alumni. Maintain a high level of confidentiality.

Manage writing projects from concept to completion—interviewing subjects, developing copy, editing and adapting content across platforms. Produce materials that build positive relationships with donors, alumni and other stakeholders.

Collaborate with Advancement communications staff to assist with overflow work and offer strategic counsel on digital communications (email, web content, mobile, social media, video scripts), gift proposals, case statements and campaign collateral.

Support the Division of University Advancement in achieving strategic and fundraising goals, as well as Campaign goals, through positive and productive interaction and collaboration with all departmental staff, University liaisons and external constituents.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree required and at least five (5) years of professional writing experience.

Preferred qualifications include advancement or higher education experience; flexibility, versatility.

Excellent written communication skills are essential.

Exceptional writer and relentless editor with understanding of the University brand and mission.

Collaborative, creative, deadline‑oriented and customer‑service focused, with a keen eye for nuance and deep understanding of audience.

Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team, manage projects under deadlines, build relationships and volunteer engagement, and maintain high professionalism and confidentiality.

Ability to work effectively with internal and external constituencies, including individuals of significant influence and affluence.

Demonstrable experience writing for institutional leaders and adapting to their voice for written communications.

Proficiency with Google suite of applications and ability to produce professional documents and presentations.

Familiarity with advancement systems such as Raiser’s Edge and iModules is preferred.

Exceptional attention to detail and proofreading ability, combined with strong interpersonal and written communication skills.

Proven capacity to manage competing priorities, exercise sound judgment and apply effective organizational practices in a fast‑paced environment.
