The English Department offers a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate courses to meet the needs of students with a diversity of interests and backgrounds. By studying literature, critical theory, rhetoric, composition, and creative writing, students in the Department of English acquire experience in intertextual and cross‑disciplinary inquiry represented by many cultures and historical periods. They learn critical approaches to texts and issues that enable them to interpret and compare positions; to read closely, critically, and with empathy; to conduct research; to weigh evidence; and to write with insight and expertise.

Teaching Responsibilities

The Creative Writing program is looking for qualified instructors to teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in Fiction Writing, including:

  • Wr 212 – Intro to Fiction Writing
  • Wr 312 – Intermediate Fiction Writing
  • Wr 407 – Seminar: Fiction
  • Wr 412 – Advanced Fiction Writing
  • Wr 507 – MFA Seminar: Fiction

Minimum Qualifications

  • MFA or PhD in Fiction (all courses)
  • Distinguished record of publication, including at least one book of fiction; one year demonstrated excellence in teaching fiction writing (500‑level courses)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two quarters of demonstrated successful teaching of college‑level fiction writing and significant publications in the genre (300‑ and 400‑level courses)
  • Experience teaching at the graduate level (500‑level courses)
  • Creates an environment that acknowledges, encourages, and celebrates differences
  • Functions and communicates effectively and respectfully within the context of varying beliefs, behaviors, orientations, identities and cultural backgrounds
  • Seeks opportunities to gain experience working and collaborating in diverse, multicultural, and inclusive settings with a willingness to change for continual improvement
  • Adheres to all PSU’s policies including the policies on Prohibited Discrimination & Harassment and the Professional Standards of Conduct

Compensation

Adjunct faculty members are paid per credit hour per the AFT Collective Bargaining Agreement which can be found at https://www.pdx.edu/academic-affairs/academic-unions#psufa.
