SESSION-ONLY LEGAL PROOFREADER/EDITOR Maine Legislature Augusta, Maine The Office of the Revisor of Statutes, the nonpartisan staff office responsible for drafting and processing legislation and maintaining the Maine Revised Statutes, is seeking a session-only Legal Proofreader/Editor who values public service and is enthusiastic about supporting the important work of the Maine Legislature. This is a full-time position during the legislative session, working on-site in Augusta. A Legal Proofreader/Editor proofreads and edits legislative documents; reads aloud in teams; and must have superior English grammar skills, the ability to work accurately under pressure and excellent interpersonal skills. An employee in this position works in a highly confidential and nonpartisan manner. Extensive seasonal overtime and scheduling flexibility are required. Examples of Responsibilities Editing and proofreading in a team environment Reviewing a variety of legislative documents for spelling, grammar, form, consistency and clarity Assisting with other office duties as assigned Desired Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in English or closely related field, or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience; ability to edit and proofread by reading aloud in teams; strong interpersonal and communication skills; and ability to work evenings or weekends depending on legislative or operational needs. Prior experience as a proofreader or editor is preferred but not required. Knowledge of format, style and organization of Maine laws is helpful but not required. Accuracy and attention to detail are essential.
