NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk
is a 306-bed medical center, providing care to residents of eastern Long Island. The hospital facility is home to the Knapp Cardiac Care Center—an advanced heart disease diagnostic and treatment facility—as well as a modern ambulatory surgical pavilion with specialized services including women's imaging, a sleep laboratory, and bariatric surgery. Our Provisional Level 2 Trauma Center delivers comprehensive and specialized care for patients with traumatic injuries. The Stroke Center at NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk is designated by the New York State Department of Health as a Primary Stroke Center, with expert neurologists available to provide treatment 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Additionally, NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk has multiple outpatient sites, including an outpatient wound care center, a hemodialysis center, and various primary care and specialty offices.

Position Summary We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Telephone Operator – Telecommunications – Full Time, Nights – 11:00 PM – 7:00 AM, Tuesday – Saturday. In this role, the successful candidate, with some supervision, is responsible for processing incoming and outgoing calls as they are received. The operator will manage telephones, public address and paging systems, and maintain records and daily logbooks.
Job Responsibilities
Answer and process incoming/outgoing calls as they are received.
Transfer call to the correct person / department.
Provide approved patient information.
Comply with policies when paging overhead.
Place calls for in-house and long-range pagers.
Notify departmental on‑call staff as requested.
Ensure that Administrative/Department Head staff is notified immediately.
Activate the Emergency Notification System.
Maintain operator’s computer console.
Utilize department’s on‑call schedules using the computer console.
Maintain physicians house status.
Participate in all departmental staff meetings.
Makes recommendations regarding departmental policies and procedures.
Assist with orientation and training of new hires.
Encourage teamwork and a collaborative work environment.
Communicate with staff at the change of each shift.
Assist callers professionally, utilizing effective volume, tone, inflection and voice etiquette.
Maintain a positive attitude towards callers and all staff members.
Convey ideas and information clearly and correctly.
Maintain good working relationships with all staff members.
Respond to changes in the workplace and be able to adjust work habits accordingly.
Demonstrate Core Values at all times.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalency.
Ability to read and write, understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
Effective communication skills to transmit information orally in simple sentences.
Professional telephone etiquette: pleasing tone, volume, inflection.
Professional interpersonal skills.
Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail for up to 80% of work time when answering, transferring, and relaying calls and delivering messages.
