Job Title: Senior Graphic Designer & Web Developer
Function: Responsible for providing leadership in graphic design, branding and web development for the New Mexico BioPark Society (NMBPS). This position is an integral part of the Creative & Marketing team, supporting projects that advance NMBPS’s mission and other initiatives that directly support the ABQ BioPark.
Reports to: Marketing & Communications Director
Areas of Responsibility (Including, but not limited to)
Graphic Design
Lead and collaborate with the Creative & Marketing team on the design direction, concept development and production of creative material for all NMBPS departments, including print, digital and multimedia assets.
Develop, maintain and evolve a consistent brand identity across all creative materials and campaigns.
Collaborate with internal teams, sponsors, donors and partners to ensure proper representation of multiple NMBPS and ABQ BioPark brand identities.
Provide design solutions, creative direction, mentorship and feedback on all NMBPS visual projects.
Capture and edit professional-quality photos and videos to support creative projects.
Create, manage and expand asset libraries, including photos, illustrations and multimedia assets.
Produce and edit professional videos and, when needed, create custom digital illustrations.
Manage and collaborate with the creative and marketing coordinator in the design and production of BioScape, the quarterly membership magazine.
Web Development & Design
Lead the design, development and maintenance of all NMBPS websites (org, riveroflights.org, runforthezoo.org, abqbooatthezoo.org), including the custom membership and events portal.
Ensure websites are visually engaging, user-friendly and aligned with the organization’s branding and strategic goals.
Manage web hosting, DNS and domain renewals.
Implement and maintain website security measures, including SSL protocols, PCI certification, backups and scanning.
Manage e-commerce systems, including online payment processing, product pages and POS/mobile payment systems.
Collaborate with departments to design and implement web content.
Coordinate and oversee external web contractors as needed.
IT
Additional areas, if applicable: Support and maintain NMBPS IT infrastructure in collaboration with contracted IT support company, including servers, computers, mobile devices, internet and network connections, email, phones, communication apps, payment processing systems, project management tools and security systems, while also providing technical support to staff through troubleshooting, repairs and maintenance of office equipment and software.
Qualifications
Graphic Design
A minimum of five years’ professional experience in graphic design, including at least two years in a senior-level role, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
Proven ability to lead creative projects from concept through completion, including mentoring junior designers or contractors.
Strong proficiency with:
Print and layout design
Branding and marketing design
Digital illustration and image editing
Photography and photo editing
Video production and editing
Advanced proficiency with design software such as:
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe InDesign
Adobe Photoshop
Adobe Lightroom
Adobe Acrobat Pro
Email marketing design through various platforms (e.g., Mailchimp, Wordfly)
Web Development
A minimum of two years’ professional experience in web design/development, or four years’ related experience in a similar role.
Proficiency with:
WordPress CMS
Hosting and DNS configuration
PHP and MySQL basics
E-commerce integration (WooCommerce and Square)
CRM systems
IT
Basic to intermediate experience preferred, with general proficiency in Windows and macOS environments and hardware, as well as iOS and Android devices and other consumer electronics such as projectors, TV screens, speakers and other computer peripherals.
Leadership & Professional Skills
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
Strong collaboration and communication skills, with experience working across departments and with external partners.
Ability to mentor junior team members, contractors or interns in design best practices and technical skills.
Strategic thinker with the ability to align creative and digital work with organizational goals.
Working Conditions
Mostly indoor work, with some outdoor tasks in seasonal weather.
Requires walking, standing and occasional lifting (up to 30 pounds), kneeling or crouching.
Must be comfortable working with and photographing wildlife (animals, plants, fish) and working closely with animal care and plant staff.
Occasional evening and weekend work required.
