Marine Electrician (Entry Level) – Newport News, VA
Serco is hiring a Marine Electrician to be part of a dynamic team supporting the U.S. Navy with equipment and C5ISR system installations in Newport News, Virginia. You will fabricate and assemble various electromechanical and electronic assemblies while applying safety techniques.
Responsibilities
Install and repair wiring, fixtures, and equipment for all electrical services aboard ship and in shipyard facilities.
Follow blueprints and wiring diagrams.
Install conduit to bulkheads with brackets and screws, using hand tools and thread wires. Install connection boxes, circuit breakers, voltage regulators, and switch panels.
Strip insulation from wire ends and solder ends to terminals.
Connect power‑supply circuits to radio, radar, sonar, fire control, and other electronic equipment.
Test electrical characteristics such as voltage, resistance, and phase angle using voltmeters, ohmmeters, and phase rotation indicators.
Troubleshoot electrical equipment and circuits using appropriate test equipment to detect and effect required maintenance, repairs, or replacement requirements.
Perform maintenance and repair of generators, switchboards, controllers, circuit breakers, electrical motors, distribution panels, and alarm and lighting circuits.
Conduct insulation resistance measurements of electrical cables to determine condition and effect repairs or replacements as required.
Maintain adequate inventories of electrical spare parts and reconcile requisitions as required.
Lifting: up to 50 lb, carrying, pushing or pulling up to 40 lb for majority of shift; work in standing, crouching, or walking positions.
Qualifications
Ability to obtain a Secret Clearance.
High School Diploma.
6 + months experience in wire/cable pulling or electrical components.
Ability to obtain and gain access to shipyards (NAVSTA & DBIDS), undergo a background investigation and pass a drug screening.
OSHA certification.
Ability to work in high heat spaces, climb shipyard dry‑dock stairs/ladders, and work in a kneeling position for cable layout under false decking.
Attention to safety.
Respirator qualified and willing to wear proper PPE throughout shift.
Willing to travel up to 10 % to various sites.
Preferred Experience
Active Secret clearance.
Shipboard experience.
OSHA 10 certification.
Familiarity with NAVSEA, standard concepts, practices, and procedures within electrical repair, fabrication, and installation.
