The Hawaiian Collection is the world's foremost research collection of current and retrospective materials pertaining to Hawai'i that documents the cultural, social, political, economic, artistic, and historical forces that shape the life experiences of the people in Hawai'i. This internationally recognized collection not only facilitates scholarship of UH Manoa students and faculty but also research by local, national and international users. The collection has a broad interest and attempts to collect all significant published works and complimentary unpublished materials in a subject area that meets the current and future scholarship needs about Hawai'i. While all aspects of Hawai'i are of interest, special emphasis is placed on acquiring materials on Hawaiian studies and language (i.e., pertaining to Native Hawaiians), Ethnic studies, (i.e., pertaining to Hawai'is ethnic groups), and the history of Hawai'i. This position is one of three Hawaiian Collection librarians.

Under the general direction of the Department Chair, Hawaiian & Pacific Collections Department, and in collaboration with the librarians of the Hawaiian and Pacific Collections, this librarian will support the development and growth of the Hawaiian Collection and the Hawai'i-related research needs of its patrons by providing specialized public and reference services, information literacy instructional services, and collection development and management.

Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Provides reference services regarding Hawai'i and the Pacific Islands (Melanesia, Micronesia, Polynesia), including reference desk work, and consultations both in-person and remotely by phone, email and other modes of communication.
2. Conducts collection development and collection management work for the Hawaiian Collection, including digitized and born-digital material.
3. Participates in library instruction and collection promotion activities.
4. Facilitates access to the Hawaiian Collection by developing and implementing strategies grounded in Hawaiian knowledge and informed by Indigenous approaches towards information management.
5. As a member of the Hawaiian and Pacific Collections department, participates in departmental initiatives and represents the department in committee work and meetings.
6. Librarians hold faculty status and are expected to meet requirements for tenure and promotion through professional development, travel, research, service, and other scholarly and institutional contributions.

Librarian II (B2) Minimum Qualifications
1. Master's degree in library or information science from a program accredited by the American Library Association or from a college or university of recognized standing.
2. Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.
3. Demonstrated knowledge of Native Hawaiian history, language, politics, practices or contemporary issues.

Librarian III (B3) Minimum Qualifications
1. A Master's degree in library or information science; in addition to the Master's degree, 24 post-baccalaureate credits of academic study; and at least three years of appropriate experience.
2. Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.
3. Demonstrated knowledge of Native Hawaiian history, language, politics, practices or contemporary issues.

Librarian IV (B4) Minimum Qualifications
1. A Master's degree in library or information science; a second Master's degree in a specialized subject area; and seven years of appropriate experience or four years in the rank of Librarian III.
2. Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.
3. Demonstrated knowledge of Native Hawaiian history, language, politics, practices or contemporary issues.

Desirable Qualifications
1. Knowledge of and/or experience providing reference assistance commensurate with research library standards to the full range of library users.
2. Knowledge of and/or experience with library instruction.
3. Knowledge of and/or experience using standard reference sources for Hawai'i.
4. Knowledge of and/or experience using standard reference sources for the Pacific Islands.
5. Knowledge of and/or experience in collection development in a research/academic library.
6. Knowledge of and/or experience with the standards and tools for digitizing and creating, describing and preserving digital collections.
7. Knowledge of and/or experience of the standards and tools for acquiring, describing and managing archival material.
8. Knowledge of Pacific Islands history and/or current events in the Pacific.
9. Knowledge of and/or experience with developments in Indigenous libraries and archives.
10. Undergraduate and/or graduate coursework related to Hawai'i.
11. Undergraduate and/or graduate coursework related to the Pacific Islands.
12. Excellent English oral and written communication skills.
13. Proficiency in Hawaiian language.
14. Proficiency in a Pacific Islands language.
15. Proficiency in a non-Indigenous language of Hawai'i or the Pacific Islands.
16. Evidence of ability to develop initiatives and effectively lead others.
17. Evidence of ability to work independently and follow through on work assignments.
18. Evidence of ability to work in a collegial and collaborative environment.
19. Evidence of ability to work effectively with a culturally diverse user population.
20. Competence in computer use and web-based library tools (e.g. Alma, LibGuides, etc.).
