Description

I. Purpose of Job
Under general supervision, designs, implements, and oversees a variety of programs and activities to encourage the use of the library by young adults between the ages of 12 and 18 in the Maury County Public Library System. Activities include developing and implementing a variety of programs for teens, assisting with the procurement of programmatic materials, and assisting with outreach activities. Assists with overseeing the daily activities of the teen section of the main library, researches grants and assists with obtaining grant funding, assists with public relations activities, and maintains and updates the library website.

II. Essential Job Duties
A. Teen Section and Programs
-Provides direction to all staff and volunteers participating in teen educational and instructional programs for the Maury County library system.
-Develops and implements innovative programs for teens, including literacy initiatives, STEM activities, creative arts, and leadership opportunities.
-Coordinates and facilitates teen advisory board meetings to encourage engagement and program development based on teen interests.
-Establishes partnerships with local schools, organizations, and community groups to enhance teen programming and outreach efforts.
-Manages large library-wide initiatives like Summer Reading or other multi-partner programs.

B. Collection and Inventory Management
-Recommends the ordering of books, periodicals, reference materials, and other supplies for teen activities and curriculum.
-Ensures the maintenance of an accurate inventory of all library books, audio books, CDs, equipment and supplies for the teen section of the main library.
-Evaluates collection; identifies materials that need to be replaced, added, or weeded to ensure relevance and appeal to teen readers.
-Develops and maintains a specialized collection of materials focused on young adult literature, college and career readiness, and social issues relevant to teens.
-Ensures computer hardware components and software applications are up to date to support teen learning and engagement.

C. Social Media, Promotion, and Public Outreach
-Oversees and assists with planning outreach activities to enhance the awareness of library programs and resources for teens.
-Makes presentations to schools, civic clubs, church groups, and other organizations to inform them of library operations and services related to teen programming.

-Creates a variety of publicity materials including flyers, newsletters, and promotional materials to promote the activities of the public library.
-Assists with maintaining and updated the public library website with relevant teen related content.
-Uses social networking tools and other digital platforms to promote library events and programs targeted at young adults.
-Prepares library displays, bibliographies, and reading lists to market the teen collection and encourage engagement.
-Develops strategies for increasing teen participation in library programs through targeted outreach and engagement efforts.

D. Patron Services and Assistance
-Interacts with library patrons and addresses any issues and/or concerns related to teen activities.
-Assists with teaching computer classes.
-Educates library patrons, individually and in groups, in the use of electronic resources including the library's webpage, catalog, research databases, and online downloadable resources.
-Provides answers to reference and readers advisory questions in person, over the phone, and through electronic forums.
-Provides direct public service at service points.

E. Administrative Activities
-As directed, prepares and submits grant applications to public and private entities to support and enhance library operations and services.
-Compiles data and prepares reports for the Library Board, regional and state library officials and County Commission regarding circulation, attendance for various activities, budgetary issues.

-Assists in the implementation of strategic planning initiatives.
-Recruits volunteers to assist with special events and assist with library operations.
-Responsible for compliance with all pertinent federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and ordinances as well as all library policies and procedures.

F. Miscellaneous
-Attends conferences, workshops, seminars, etc. to remain current on issues affecting public library operations.
-Serves as librarian in charge during shifts as needed.

III. Other Job Duties
Performs other job duties as assigned.

IV. Primary Job Challenges
One of the primary challenges of the Teen Services Librarian role is effectively designing and implementing a diverse range of educational programs for teens while ensuring engagement and accessibility for the community.

V. Equipment Operated
General office equipment including computers, copiers, printers, fax machines, and multiline telephone.

VI. Key Competencies Required
-Job Content Knowledge:
Thorough knowledge of library science including the appropriate cataloging and storing of books, periodicals, reference materials, etc.; Understanding of TCA laws and regulations related to library operations.

Language Skills:
Level 3: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports,
business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, customers, and the general public.
Mathematical Skills:
Level 2: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning Ability:
Level 3: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out multi-step instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems by choosing from several known choices with frequent reliance on how problems were dealt with before.
Teamwork: Develops constructive and cooperative working relationships with others. Encourages others to express their ideas and opinions. Provides input into identifying and solving problems. Anticipates need of others for information about job tasks and work
environment and provides it to them in a timely manner. Willingly assists others with job tasks when appropriate.

VII. Physical Demands and Work Environment
Physical Demands: Performance of the essential duties of this job requires the incumbent to:

Work Environment:
The work environment is indoors and typically moderately quiet.

Requirements

VIII. Qualifications
Education and Experience: The required knowledge, skill, and abilities to satisfactorily perform job duties are normally acquired through attainment of a Master's Degree in Library/Information Science (MLS or MSIS) or equivalent plus three (3) years of related experience working with teens for a public or school library, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Certifications/Licenses:
Valid Tennessee Driver's License and the ability to be insured at standard vehicle liability rates.
