FLSA Status/Hours: Non-Exempt/Up to 40 hours per week

A Place Called Home is a dynamic, non-profit youth and community center in South Central Los Angeles. APCH provides educational programs, counseling, mentoring, music, dance and art classes, fitness and health and wellness opportunities. As youth participate in our programs, they discover interests and talents and develop a better sense of themselves and their place in the world around them. Our goal is to increase the likelihood that youth will stay in school, pursue higher education, attain viable jobs, and become active community members capable of making positive change in the world in which they live.

SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Associate Director of Arts and Creative Expressions, the Visual Arts Specialist ensures program execution aligns with departmental goals, strategy, budget, and expectations. The Visual Arts Specialist has direct supervisory responsibilities for Visual Arts Program staff and independent contractors, translating policies and initiatives into effective program applications.

The Visual Arts Program Specialist is responsible for administering program goals, youth values, agency best practices, and program efficiencies. They implement and oversee innovative, hands-on arts activities and community engagement opportunities for APCH members, in alignment with established agency goals.

PROGRAM INSTRUCTION & CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT
  • Facilitate and lead daily Visual Arts classes, ensuring measurable outcomes for youth of different ages and skill levels.
  • Develop and implement high-quality, engaging lesson plans and curriculum that are responsive to members' interests, culturally relevant, and utilize a variety of instructional techniques (e.g., project-based learning, field trips, guest instructors).
  • Develop/plan program work plans, monitoring program progress, and regularly reporting updates on program activities
  • Plan and manage program activities, including class schedules, field trips, projects, and productions, ensuring alignment with program goals.
  • Provide classroom management, including maintaining cleanliness and organization of the Visual Arts Programming Area.
  • Support and collaborate with Visual Arts team members in carrying out center philosophy and approach
  • Address youth behavior appropriately following the agency's guidelines and approach
ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES
  • Track attendance and program participation within the Visual Arts program using the Apricot database
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with neighborhood organizations, the arts community, and external partners to expand resources and opportunities for youth participants
  • Provide clear leadership and management of the Teaching Artist and other program staff, contractors, interns and volunteers in order to plan, facilitate and ensure success of visual art programs
  • Collaborate across departments to support multidisciplinary activities, culminating events, and special projects
  • Communicate effectively with staff and support the AD in managing internal projects, events, and partnerships.Mentor and serve as a role model for youth participants, adhering to agency behavioral guidelines and fostering a non-competitive, non-confrontational environment
  • Process visual arts program employee and independent contractor payments
  • Maintain accurate inventory of art supplies and materials including submitting orders
  • Curate talent for the annual Gala and culminating events
  • Manage and balance the Visual Arts Program budget
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Attend all required program meetings (Department meetings, Check-in with Supervisor, etc.) and attend outside meetings and events related to program needs and development
  • Prepare and submit all paperwork in a timely manner (Monthly reports, assessments, etc.)
  • Work with the APCH programs team to enforce center rules and policies
  • Assist with the supervision of the Visual Art Program studio during administrative and program hours
  • Assist with the supervision of youth participants during program hours, special events and field trips
  • Manage the onsite art gallery
  • Contribute to ongoing development of program elements and policies
  • Adhere to the highest ethical and professional standards and values at all times
  • Perform other tasks as assigned

2-3 years experience working with youth in a classroom setting

2-3 years experience managing other staff

Intermediate to Advanced knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud

Physical and Mental Demands
  • Able to work in a dynamic and high noise level environment typical of a youth center
  • Walking, standing required on daily basis
  • Sitting and use of hands/vision for computer work for extended periods of time
  • Lift up to 25 pounds occasionally
