Description

This is a part-time position for approximately 5-16 hours a week. This position will start January 5 for training with the formal start date January 26. Under the supervision of the Director of Outreach & Access Services, this employee directs the operation of the Circulation Desk during the evening and on weekends. The employee is also responsible for maintaining the security of both the building and the collections during these periods and for ensuring that library policies are upheld.

MAJOR DUTIES:

Serves as Circulation Supervisor and oversees the operation of the Circulation Desk. Tasks include charging/discharging library materials; issuing library cards; maintaining patron records. Supervises student assistants and assigns tasks, directs activities, evaluates performance, reinforces training, and reports attendance and work performance. Provides patrons with basic information about the policies and operation of the library. Offers basic reference assistance (e.g. assistance in searching the library catalog). Resolves problems and trouble-shoots basic computer/printer equipment issues. Maintains a strong presence at the Circulation Desk at all times; informs students when they have to be away from the front desk. Wherever possible, substitutes for other library supervisors.

Serves as Building Supervisor and performs regular rounds of the library to monitor the safety and security of patrons, library collections, and the building. Resolves problems where possible; reports major problems to the relevant authority (e.g. Campus Security; the Director). If scheduled to work Saturday or Sunday morning, prepares and opens the library. When Kirby Library is open, performs periodic checks of that library to confirm that it is fully staffed and operational. Assumes responsibility for the building and secures the building at closing time.

HOURS:

The work schedule will be set at the beginning of each semester; this schedule may vary from semester to semester. Assigned hours may be adjusted at different times of the semester (e.g. during semester breaks and the final examination period). Hours will also vary and be reduced during Interim and Summer Sessions. Standard work shifts may vary; in general, hours are as follows:

• Mondays - Thursdays: 5 pm - 1 am

• Fridays: 5 pm - 10 pm

• Saturday: 10 am - 5 pm; 5 pm - 10 pm

• Sunday: 10 am - 5 pm; 5 pm - 1am

Qualifications

ABILITIES, SKILLS, AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

• Ability to exercise initiative, tact, and independent judgement.

• Ability to work well with the public and with other members of staff.

• Ability to supervise and direct the work of student employees.

• Good communication skills.

• Aptitude for detailed work.

• Basic knowledge of computers, printers and other circulating equipment.

• Dependable and responsible.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Pushing book carts with 40-50 pounds of weight. Keyboarding, computer work in general office environment. Ability to spend extended periods of time walking and standing in the library's stack areas; the ability to access the book stacks to check the work of student employees; the ability to grasp, move, and arrange books, periodicals, book supports, etc.; the ability to lift up to 25 lbs.; the ability to manipulate levers, trays, etc. of printer equipment.
