Job Description And Duties
Under the direct supervision of the Supervisor of Correctional Education Program or their Assistant Principal designee, the Senior Librarian is responsible for functional supervision, operation, scheduling and collections of the institution's law and general libraries. The Senior Librarian coordinates, publishes and distributes the schedule for hours of operations for each library to ensure all incarcerated people throughout the institution have required access times. The Senior Librarian makes recommendations to their direct supervisor regarding compliance issues involving access, disabled incarcerated people and appropriate accommodations, collection maintenance and development, and other issues as required. The Senior Librarian completes and submits the appropriate purchase requisitions to maintain all compliance components of the law and general libraries. This role provides functional supervision and direction related to library operations and procedures to the librarians and library technical assistants throughout the institution.
Directly oversees operations for the institution's largest and most complex library as directed by their supervisor. Functionally supervises all institutional law and general library operations and ensures that all procedural requirements are followed. Provides on‑the‑job training and recommendations of corrective actions to the first line supervisor to maintain compliance.
Develops, publishes and distributes monthly operational schedules for each law and general library to ensure compliance with all mandates regarding access for incarcerated persons. Provides recommendations to the direct supervisor for library staff coverage to meet scheduled hours of operations.
Working Conditions
San Quentin Rehabilitation Center is California’s oldest correctional institution, located 12 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge in Marin County. The campus includes four large cell blocks (West, South, North, and East), a maximum‑security cell block (Adjustment Center), a Central Health Care Service Building, a medium‑security dorm, and a minimum‑security firehouse.
