Job Summary
The Instruction and Reference Librarian will be responsible for providing direct service to users through course-related instruction, consultations, and responses to reference inquiries. This position will also participate substantially in the development of MERIT's collections. In addition, the librarian will work to embody a strong, proactive patron-service ethic.
This position works in MERIT (Media, Education, Research, and Information Technology), a vibrant service unit with a collaborative team of teaching and learning specialists, information technologists, and librarians that stewards the School of Education's Information Environment. Through ongoing leadership in the adoption of emerging technologies, MERIT empowers members of the School of Education community and its partners to achieve excellence. This position reports to the Public Services Manager. Key Job Responsibilities
Develops and curates collections
Serves as a liaison to academic disciplines and/or other campus units providing information on collections, instructional and research support, and library services
May direct the day-to-day activities of student workers
Serves on committees to advance librarianship at the campus, local, and/or state levels
Contributes to the development of policies and procedures
Provides specialized services utilizing a high level of expertise on a broad range of disciplines or in a designated discipline area
Cultivates and maintains productive relationships with vendors and professional colleagues
Assists with the coordination of day-to-day functions of one or more library operations or services
Designs, develops, and delivers instruction in a variety of formats to faculty, staff, students, and other patrons
Obtains materials, resolves issues, and answers questions particularly related to situations that are complex in nature
Department School of Education / MERIT (Media, Education, Research, and Information Technology)
Compensation Minimum: $56,112
Commensurate with qualifications and experience. This position offers a comprehensive benefits package, including generous paid time off, competitively priced health/dental/vision/life insurance, tax-advantaged savings accounts, and participation in the nationally recognized Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS) pension fund.
Required Qualifications
Experience teaching in a higher education classroom setting
Reference experience
Demonstrated commitment to public service
Excellent writing and editing skills accompanied by strong oral communication skills
The ability to work independently while actively collaborating with others
Preferred Qualifications
Background in teacher education
Experience providing library services at a large research university
Experience with information literacy or technology instruction
Experience developing lessons and teaching materials
Technology troubleshooting skills and aptitude
Experience with copy cataloging
Experience with Alma
Education The preferred minimum is an MA or MLIS in Library and Information Studies (or equivalent). A bachelor's degree is required.
