Overview
1st Class Marine Electrician - Interior Communications (apx 50% Travel) Join to apply for the 1st Class Marine Electrician - Interior Communications (apx 50% Travel) role at NANA. Akima Systems Engineering (ASE) is looking a 1st Class Marine Electrician to work in Suffolk, Virginia. 50% travel required within and outside of the continental United States. Work Schedule: Monday thru Saturday 10 hours a day (as needed).
Responsibilities
Marine Electricians install, connect, test, and maintain electrical systems for a variety of purposes, including interior communications.
Maintain and repair electrical systems on marine vessels; troubleshoot, repair, and maintain electronic equipment on board vessels and in shipyard facilities.
Apply advanced technical knowledge to solve complex problems that cannot be solved solely by referencing manuals or similar documents.
Determine circuitry locations, evaluate electromagnetic radiation, isolate malfunctions, and incorporate engineering changes.
Understand interrelations of circuits, perform circuit analyses, calculate waveforms, and trace signal flow using complex test instruments (e.g., high frequency pulse generators, frequency synthesizers, distortion analyzers, and complex computer control equipment).
Work may be reviewed by supervisor for compliance with accepted practices and may provide technical guidance to lower-level technicians.
Display levels of quality, integrity, safety, respect, engagement, and performance consistent with company values.
Under guidance, install, operate, maintain, repair, and modify equipment and structures for fleet modernization on US Navy surface ships.
Layout, fabricate, and install electrical wiring, coaxial cable, or fiber optic onboard Navy vessels.
Read and interpret schematics and blueprints; work from blueprints, engineering sketches, charts, work orders, technical documents, and other formal work packages and procedures.
Troubleshoot, repair, and install electrical equipment and cables; assist with diagnosing equipment to rapidly eliminate problems.
Perform cable removal and installation (overhead, along bulkheads, or under decks); repair and replace cables/connectors.
Conform to established quality and safety procedures; may inspect completed work for conformance to specifications.
Maintain effective supervisor and manager communications; remove, plan, execute, install, and modify electrical cabling and equipment aboard naval vessels.
Complete electrical and data conductor disconnections and reconnections for complete installations.
Qualifications
Clearance: DoD Secret clearance required.
Education: High school diploma, GED or industrial/trade school certificate.
Minimum 5–7 years of experience in operation, maintenance and repair of electrical systems and equipment on-board Navy vessels, U.S. Coast Guard vessels, MSC or Maritime vessels; practical shipboard HM&E experience.
Familiarity with one or more Interior Communications (IC) systems: MC, HYDRA, IVN, IVCN, SATCC, SIWCS.
Past supervisory experience is a plus.
Ability to access government installations by obtaining and maintaining a DBIS credential to perform work on-board US Naval vessels or government sites.
Overtime and weekend work as required; travel outside Suffolk, VA area if needed.
Experience with Fiber Optic cables and multi-pin connectors; trade tools possession; team communication skills.
Understanding of NSI 009-73 requirements (inspections, testing, installation, removal and repair of shipboard electrical cabling and equipment) and related cable installations.
Experience with electrical distribution systems, cable penetrations, and proper cable management; reading electrical drawings and schematics; safe use of multimeters and megohmmeters.
Preferred Qualifications
Current NAVSEA NSI 009-73 certifications (multipin connector) and NSI 009-123 fiber optic certification are highly preferred.
NAVSEA Cableway Improvement Program certifications; vocational/skill trades certificate programs.
Current or active DoD Secret clearance preferred; OSHA 10 Maritime Certification is a plus.
Microsoft Office knowledge is a plus.
Physical Demands
Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes (no less than 30 lbs).
Able to work on ladders, in extreme temperatures, aboard ships, in shipyards, and in confined spaces; work in high heat, humidity, noise, and dirty conditions; work aloft or over the sides of vessels.
May ride ships at sea for extended periods; may require wearing a respirator.
50% travel required within and outside of the continental United States.
