Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children has been providing compassionate care to children, teenagers, and young adults in Central Florida for more than 30 years. Located on the downtown Orlando campus, the hospital includes 156 licensed beds for specialized child care and a Bert Martin’s Champions for Children Emergency Department & Trauma Center, which serves as the pediatric site of the Orlando Health ORMC Level One Trauma Center.
Position Summary The Music Therapist is responsible for providing music therapy in both group and individualized sessions to meet the psychosocial and developmental needs of patients and their families. The therapist assesses, plans, implements, documents, and evaluates services based on policy, standards of practice, and interdisciplinary collaboration within the healthcare team.
Responsibilities
Assesses and interacts with patients and families using music therapy principles and theories of human growth, family systems, and socio‑cultural diversity.
Recognizes the importance of music therapy in facilitating patient mastery and coping with health care experiences and other life‑altering events.
Uses formal and informal assessment techniques to determine patients’ health needs and emotional status; documents interventions.
Identifies general issues in family dynamics and considers them while initiating interventions.
Provides direction to hospital volunteers related to patient care activity and services.
Mentors music therapy practicum students to enhance understanding of practice.
Provides a therapeutic and safe environment for individuals and groups.
Facilitates developmentally appropriate group activities; attends to individual bedside needs when indicated.
Maintains age‑appropriate supplies and assists patients in coping with illness or loss through appropriate interventions.
Incorporates techniques that encourage self‑expression through original song creation.
Collaborates with other disciplines to advocate patient needs.
Provides music education to enhance the quality of the health care experience by matching interests and abilities with specific modalities.
Provides clinical support to patients and families of all age groups.
Assesses patient needs and provides age‑appropriate non‑pharmacological pain management techniques (music relaxation, auditory environment enhancement, distraction).
Provides parental guidance regarding effective use of music for adjustment to hospitalization or treatment.
Modifies and integrates various music interventions to accommodate individual and group settings.
Uses recording studio equipment for creative songwriting and music skill development.
Advocates for the needs of patients and families by maintaining communication with healthcare staff.
Observes, assesses, and documents information about psychosocial issues of pediatric patients and families and the specific music therapy treatment plan.
Participates in unit, department, hospital meetings, committees, and task forces.
Assists Senior Music Therapists or department management with research projects, program analytics, or leadership initiatives as indicated.
Adheres to the professional code of ethics and standards of practice for the Music Therapy profession.
Establishes working relationships within the hospital system and community agencies.
Maintains board certification as granted by the Certification Board for Music Therapists.
Engages with professional musicians and trainees to facilitate their involvement with patients and families.
Participates in productivity and team building efforts in the department and hospital.
Respects and supports patient/family rights and advocates for patients/families.
Participates in Healing Arts activities (choirs, exhibitions, concerts, fundraisers) as needed when working in adult hospitals.
Maintains reasonable, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, ADA, FMLA and federal, state, local standards.
Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.
Other Related Functions
Effectively and efficiently uses resources, time, equipment, and supplies.
Participates in department performance improvement efforts.
Qualifications Education/Training
Bachelor’s degree in Music Therapy or related music education training.
Licensure/Certification
Must maintain current professional Music Therapist – Board Certified MT‑BC certification; or eligible to sit for the exam and successfully complete within the first year of employment.
Maintains current BLS/HealthCare Provider certification.
Experience
Music Therapy internship required.
