Department Information

The Department of Journalism and Mass Communications is the fourth largest major at Savannah State University and accredited by the Accredited Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications.

Job Summary

The Department of Journalism and Mass Communications at Savannah State University is seeking a media professional to enhance the educational experience of our students through hands-on opportunities in TV production. The ideal candidate will oversee the operations of WTRT-TV, manage the JMC labs, handle equipment check-outs, maintain inventory, and foster a welcoming environment for all students. This role is integral to helping students develop practical skills in a dynamic learning environment.

NOTE : In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required eligibility verification form upon hire. This position does not offer sponsorship for employment visas.

Responsibilities
  • Program Direction: Oversee the programming and production activities of WTRT-TV, ensuring high-quality content that aligns with educational objectives.
  • Student Engagement: Provide enriching opportunities for students to practice TV production, offering guidance and support during lab sessions.
  • Mac Lab Management: Oversee the daily operations of the JMC labs, including opening and closing procedures to ensure a safe and productive learning environment.
  • Equipment Oversight: Manage the check-out process for JMC equipment, ensuring that all items are properly tracked, maintained, and accounted for.
  • Inventory Management: Keep the JMC equipment inventory up-to-date and make recommendations for potential purchases based on student needs and technological advancements.
  • Software Proficiency: Utilize and provide support in industry-standard software including Adobe Acrobat, Premiere Pro, Photoshop, and Audition to assist students in their projects.
  • Technical Support: Serve as a resource for resolving technical issues and provide troubleshooting assistance for students and faculty.
  • Collaboration: Work collaboratively with faculty and staff to integrate technology into the curriculum effectively.
  • Student-Centered Approach: Cultivate a friendly and supportive environment, ensuring that all students feel welcomed and encouraged in their pursuits of media arts.
  • Proficiency or be able to use Mac and PC products
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in mass communications or related field.
  • Previous professional work experience in a TV station or similar production environment required.
  • Minimum of five years of experience.
Preferred Qualifications

Audio and TV engineering preferred.

Proposed Salary

The proposed salary range is $45,000-$47,000.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Knowledge of TV-station environments to assist and train students, faculty, and staff.
  • Knowledge of audio production environments.
  • Skills in operating computers and proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (Acrobat, Premiere Pro, Photoshop, Audition).
  • Skills in using Microsoft Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as web-based software such as OneDrive, Google Drive, Forms, Canva, and Adobe Express.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written) with a friendly demeanor and a commitment to student engagement.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and maintain meticulous records related to inventory and equipment usage.
  • Ability to produce and edit audio/video productions (demonstrated by submitting a sample).
