Summary
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval – award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
Qualifications
United States Citizenship (Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy)
Doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree in medicine or osteopathic medicine, obtained from a VA‑approved school in the year the course of study was completed
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or the District of Columbia
Residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program leading to eligibility for board certification (ACGME or AOA accredited, or comparable programs with a minimum of five years of verified U.S. practice)
Physicians currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency programs eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians, may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis, are not considered independent practitioners, and will not be privileged. They have a scope of practice that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.
Proficiency in spoken and written English
Preferred: Board certified or board eligible by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA)
Highly preferred: Expertise, training, and/or familiarity with anesthesia administration for complex cardiac interventions/surgeries (e.g., CABG, TAVR)
Physical Requirements: Pre‑employment physical required. Must be able to lift 15–44 pounds, push (approx 2 hours), reach above shoulder, use fingers and both hands, walk and stand 3–5 hours, kneel, and perform rapid coordinated mental and muscular tasks. Near vision correctable at 13–16 in. to Jaeger 1–4; far vision correctable to 20/20 in one eye and 20/40 in the other. Must have depth perception and color discrimination. Hearing aid permitted.
Duties
Provide direct anesthesia care and support across multiple clinical areas within the hospital.
Conduct pre‑operative risk assessments and physical examinations.
Administer anesthesia and monitor patients during procedures.
Perform IVs, arterial/central line placements, and monitoring device set‑ups.
Provide care in the operating room, post‑anesthesia care unit, gastrointestinal/bronchoscopy suites, and bedside as needed.
Support post‑operative care, including ventilator management and pain management.
Participate in the pre‑operative assessment program.
Collaborate with CRNAs, surgeons, and interdisciplinary teams.
Complete administrative duties such as CME, committee work, and FPPE/OPPEs.
Maintain an active medical license and perform other assigned duties.
