Communications Specialist
City Manager's Office
Temporary - 19 hours per week
Rate: $40/hour - $45/hour
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Communications Specialist supports the City of Chelsea’s communications efforts by creating engaging, accessible content that raises awareness of City services and programs. This role has a particular focus on elevating the profile of the Department of Public Works through digital and print media, while also supporting broader communications initiatives across the organization.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and design content for the City’s digital and print communications, with emphasis on highlighting Department of Public Works employees, services, projects, events and initiatives
Create social media content in collaboration with the City’s Social Media Content Developer, leading content development for the City’s Traffic Advisory Facebook page
Produce the City’s weekly newsletter, “City Hall News”, in collaboration with the Communications & Community Engagement Manager
Capture, edit, and produce photography and video for digital storytelling
Write and publish content in English and Spanish to ensure broad community access
Coordinate with City departments to promote programs, events, and services
Maintain digital content calendars and ensure consistent messaging across channels
Support the Communications & Community Engagement Manager with additional projects and duties, including public relations efforts, as needed
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, journalism, public relations, or related field; or equivalent experience
2+ years of experience managing social media for an institution, government entity, or brand
Demonstrated proficiency with content creation and design tools (e.g. Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, video editing software)
Strong writing and editing skills with attention to detail
Bilingual (English/Spanish) strongly preferred
Familiarity with accessibility standards and inclusive communication practices, or willingness to learn
Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and collaborate across department
