Job Description
The Library Assistant in Youth Services provides customer service and support in the Youth Services Department, assisting children, teens, and caregivers in locating materials, using library resources, and participating in programs. This position supports readers' advisory, program assistance, and computer supervision in the youth and teen areas. While primarily assigned to Youth Services, the employee may occasionally assist in other library areas, including the Circulation Desk or branch locations, as needed.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

- Ensures a welcoming attitude and environment are presented to all library patrons.
- Circulates library materials and prepares library materials for book rotation as directed.
- Assist patrons with reader's advisory and reference questions; helps identify and clarify needs by asking questions in a friendly and professional manner.
- Opens and closes the department or facility as assigned.
- Maintains organization and cleanliness of the Youth and Teen areas; shelves and shelf-read materials to ensure accurate order.
- Assists the Youth Services Librarian in record keeping, statistics, and material displays.
- In coordination with supervisor, supports, prepares, and participates in youth and family programs such as story time, crafts, outreach visits, and the Summer Reading Program.
- Assists the Youth Services Librarian in maintaining and developing relationships with community partners and organizations.
- Assists with the use and supervision of youth computer stations and related technology.
- Maintains supplies and submits requests to supervisor as needed.
- Attends training workshops and participates in staff meetings.
- Communicates effectively with supervisor and colleagues regarding work status, patron concerns, and program needs.
- Represents the department with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation.

Physical Demands and Working Environment
An employee in this position must meet the following physical requirements upon application:
- Work is performed in a public library environment.
- Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to talk or hear, sit, use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects or controls, and reach with hands and arms. The employee may frequently be required to stand or walk for long periods of time.
- The employee must occasionally lift and move up to 40 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but noise levels may increase during programs, events, or peak public service hours. Frequent interruption to planned work activities should be expected.
