Work Arrangement
This role is categorized as hybrid. The successful candidate is expected to report to GM Mountain View Technical Center or Warren Technical Center (WTC) three times per week, or as dictated by business needs.
The Role We are the team where industrial design meets digital. As a Staff UX/UI Designer, you will help define the future of in-vehicle experiences for the next generation of GM vehicles. You’ll work on advanced concepts like eyes-off driving, conversational AI, and a range of forward-looking design strategies that shape how users interact various systems as designs evolve. This is a high-visibility, high-impact role that requires both visionary thinking and precision execution.
What You’ll Do
Architect and construct responsive designs for operating systems, application frameworks, and services that work across multiple display configurations
Define and evolve interaction patterns across controls, input modalities, navigation flows, and driving modes to deliver cohesive user experiences
Lead UX/UI design for a variety of future-facing vehicle experiences using visual, motion, 3D, sound, haptics etc. to create immersive and intuitive interfaces
Translate abstract concepts into tangible designs, prototypes, and presentations for executive audiences
Collaborate with industrial designers, engineers, and researchers to integrate digital and physical experiences
Conduct user research and usability testing to validate design hypotheses and inform iteration
Present design strategy to cross-functional leadership and align stakeholders across multiple committees
Mentor other designers and contribute to design operations, tooling, and team culture
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
Bachelor’s degree in Human Computer Interaction, Industrial Design, Ergonomics, Product Design, Design Engineering, or commensurate work experience
10+ years of experience designing digital interfaces, with strong UX and UI craft
5+ years leading design initiatives or managing teams (for Staff/Principal levels)
Portfolio that features forward-focused, conceptual, or multimodal design work
Proficiency in Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, and prototyping tools; familiarity with 3D or motion tools a plus
Exceptional presentation and storytelling skills, with experience influencing executive stakeholders
Deep understanding of user-centered design, accessibility, and agile development
Portfolio submission is required for consideration
What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
Advanced degree in HCI, Industrial Design, Ergonomics, Product Design, Design Engineering or commensurate work experience
Background in industrial design, human factors, or ergonomics
Experience with 3D modeling, motion design, sound design, multimodal interaction and interactive prototyping
Prior experience at a consumer electronics, fitness device, or automotive company
Familiarity with designing within constraints of the automotive industry, including safety-critical environments, regulatory compliance, accessibility standards, and extended timelines typical to automotive manufacturing
Skilled at navigating between blue-sky ideation and grounded execution, aligning design vision with engineering realities, timelines, and stakeholder priorities
