NBCUniversal is hiring: Producer/Editor - Nightly News: Kids Edition in New York
NBCUniversal, New York, NY, United States, 10261
Job Description
NBC News is seeking a creative and versatile Producer/Editor to help shape the next chapter of Nightly News: Kids Edition — the trusted, family‑friendly newscast that explains the world to a new generation of viewers. This role is ideal for a journalist who can write, produce, shoot, and edit with both editorial rigor and a YouTube‑native sensibility.
The ideal candidate is as comfortable crafting a story about global events as they are packaging it for digital attention spans — with curiosity, clarity, and a tone that feels authentic to kids and their families.
Responsibilities
- Write, produce, shoot, and edit short‑form news and feature segments for Nightly News: Kids Edition, optimized for YouTube and other digital platforms.
- Translate complex topics into clear, engaging stories that educate and inform without condescension.
- Collaborate with correspondents, editors, and animators to bring stories to life visually through graphics, sound design, and creative pacing.
- Pitch original story ideas and recurring segment concepts that reflect the editorial mission of Nightly — fact‑based, trustworthy, and inspiring.
- Adapt the tone and structure of network reporting for a younger audience while maintaining the journalistic standards of NBC News.
- Stay current with YouTube trends, visual storytelling formats, and youth media consumption patterns to help the show evolve.
- Manage post‑production workflows including scripting, editing, sound mixing, and thumbnail/title optimization for digital distribution.
- Ensure that every episode aligns with NBC News editorial guidelines and reflects the inclusive, trustworthy tone of Nightly News with Tom Llamas.
Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience in broadcast, digital, or streaming news production.
- Strong writing, scripting, and headline skills tailored for both linear and digital audiences.
- Advanced proficiency in Adobe Premiere Pro (After Effects and Photoshop a plus).
- Demonstrated ability to craft stories visually — strong sense of pacing, narrative arc, and tone.
Characteristics
- Experience producing content for YouTube or social‑first platforms is strongly preferred.
- Understanding of NBC News editorial values and the Nightly News brand.
- Ability to work collaboratively and thrive under deadline pressure.
- A demonstrated ability to connect with younger audiences.
The Right Candidate
You’re a journalist who believes accuracy and empathy are equally important. You can break down complex news stories in a way that helps kids — and parents — make sense of the world. You think like a teacher, write like a storyteller, and edit like a YouTuber.
